Russell Kenneth Alexander Martin (born January 4, 1986 in Brighton ) is a former Scottish football player born in England . He is under contract with the Milton Keynes Dons as head coach.

Player career

Wycombe Wanderers (2004-2008)

Russell Martin, who came from the youth of his home club Woodingdean Youth FC , moved to fourth division Wycombe Wanderers in summer 2004 after stints at Brighton & Hove Albion and the amateur club Lewes . After seven league appearances in his first season 2004/05, he earned a regular place in the defense in the following three seasons. In the 2007/08 season Martin (44 league games) reached with his team on the seventh place in the table to move into the play-offs. There the Wanderers failed in the semifinals at Stockport County (1: 1 and 0: 1).

Peterborough United (2008-2010)

On May 29, 2008, the 22-year-old defender moved to Peterborough United and signed a three-year contract. His new club had risen to the third division as runners-up in the preseason and started in 2008/09 in Football League One . During the first half of the season, Martin was appointed team captain by coach Darren Ferguson . Martin, who competed in all forty-six league games, won the runner-up with the promoted team at the end of the season and thus made it straight to the second division. After the sacking of coach Ferguson in November 2009, Martin Wycombe left after ten games in the Football League Championship 2009/10 and moved to Norwich City on loan .

Norwich City (2010-2018)

After the loan period expired, Norwich signed Russell Martin on his twenty-fourth birthday on a permanent contract basis. The team trained by Paul Lambert won the championship in the third division at the end of the 2009/10 season. Also in the Football League Championship 2010/11 the promoted got along well and achieved promotion to the Premier League with the runner-up behind the Queens Park Rangers . In his nine years in Norwich he came to 284 league games in which he scored 16 goals. In January 2018, Martin was awarded to the Scottish record champions for six months. At the end of August 2018, his contract with Norwich was terminated after he no longer played a role in the plans of coach Daniel Farke .

Milton Keynes Dons (2019-)

This was followed by a short stay at FC Walsall from October 2018 , where he was also part of the coaching staff as a player-coach under his former teammate Dean Keates , but left the club again in January 2019 for "family reasons". A little later he joined the Milton Keynes Dons , with whom he was promoted to Football League One at the end of the 2018/19 season as third in the table . After the previous coach Paul Tisdale was fired at the beginning of November 2019 because the club was one league higher after 16 matchdays on a relegation zone, Martin was appointed as the new head coach a little later.

Scottish national team

In May 2011 the son of a Scot was nominated by Craig Levein for the Scottish national team. On May 25, 2011, he played his first international match in a 1-1 friendly against Wales.
