Rusteberg is the name of an old noble family in the Eichsfeld .

Rusteberg Castle as the namesake of several noble families

Identical names

Up until the 13th century, knights and noble nobles named themselves after the place or castle where they lived or where they were appointed lords of the castle. If they became resident at another castle, they also changed their name. Only then did they take on permanent names for their headquarters, which is also what happened on the Rusteberg . Examples of nobles from other families who named themselves after Rusteberg Castle , where they were appointed lords of the castle or vice domes:

  • Vizedom Lambert (1139), sometimes wrote from Rusteberg, sometimes from Geismar
  • Cunrad von Rusteberg (1143), Ministerial
  • from the von Hanstein family :
    • Heidenreich I. and Hellwig von Rusteberg (1170), Vizedome 1162-at least 1196
    • Dietrich (Theodoricus) von Rusteberg (1209), Vizedom
    • Heidenreich II von Rusteberg, 1239–1256 Vizedom, is also called von Hanstein for the first time in 1236
    • Theodor von Rusteberg (1236) and his brother Heidenreich von Hanstein owned the tithe in Witzenhausen
    • Heinrich I von Rusteberg (1200–1257), bishop in Hildesheim
  • Family of Udera (Othera):
    • Honterus (1123) and his son Knight Hartwig von Rusteberg (1135, 1170)

history

The first mention of an Adalbert von Rusteberg is documented for 1143. Members of the von Rusteberg family served as ministerials to the Mainz electors at Rusteberg Castle . Presumably they come from the Uder noble family de Othera or de Knorr , called von Knorr, the coats of arms of those of Rusteberg and von Knorr show the same symbols (Schenkbecher or Mühleisen).

The von Rusteberg family was able to expand their influence in Eichsfeld and the upper Leinetal, was enfeoffed with estates and acquired numerous properties there (including in Kalteneber, Reckershausen, Vatterode, Rohrberg, Rustenfelde). At the end of the 13th century they came into the possession of the von Ballenhausen family through inheritance , which later came to the Bodenhausen family . In 1318 the place Deiderode came as a Brunswick-Lüneburg fief for a short time to Arnold von Rusteberg.

In 1337 Otto von Rusteberg, Johann von Wintzingerode , Bertold von Worbis and Heinrich Wolf jointly acquired the castle and lordship of Budenstein . In the same year the lords of Rusteberg were lien owners of Arnstein Castle , in 1342 they were expelled from there because of robber barons by the Archbishop of Mainz Heinrich and the Landgrave of Hesse Heinrich II. The castle then passed to the von Berlepsch family .

In 1437 the Lords of Rusteberg died out.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a two-handled cup. The shield figure on the helmet . The timing is not known.

There is a coat of arms and probably also a tribal relationship with the von Knorring also from Eichsfeld .
