Rustenburg ( English Rustenburg Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the Bojanala Platinum district in the South African province of Northwest . The seat of the community is in Rustenburg .

The community is named after the administrative seat of Rustenburg, which means "resting place" or "city of calm". The local government is run by the African National Congress , which is a minority in the council. Mayor is Mpho Khonou.

In 2011 the community had 549,575 inhabitants. 88.5% of these were black, 9.4% white, 0.9% colored and 0.8% Indian or Asian.

The first language was Setswana in 52.4% , Afrikaans in 9.6%, IsiXhosa in 9.3% , Xitsonga in 5.4% , English in 5.2%, Sesotho in 5.1% , and isiZulu in 2.8% , 1.8% Sepedi and 1% isiNdebele .
