Ruth White (writer)

Ruth C. White (born March 15, 1942 in Whitewood , Virginia - † June 8, 2017 in Hummelstown , Pennsylvania ) was an American writer .

Life

Ruth White grew up with her sisters in the mining town of Whitewood, Virginia, USA. At the age of six, she lost her father, a miner who died in a brawl. After Ruth White finished eighth grade, the mother moved the children to Michigan . Ruth White eventually returned to graduate from high school and lived with her relatives. After graduating from Montreat Anderson College in 1962 and from Pfeiffer University in 1966, White worked as an English teacher in Mount Pleasant , North Carolina from 1966 to 1976 . She completed additional training as a librarian in 1977 at the Queens University of Charlotte . She then worked from 1977 to 1981 in Dorchester , South Carolina , from 1981 to 1985 in Albany , Georgia , and from 1986 to 1997 in Virginia Beach , Virginia, both as a school librarian.

After she stopped working as a teacher and stayed at home for a year, White published her first novel, The City Rose, in 1977 under the name Ruth White Miller . The children's book was nominated for the Georgia Children's Book Award. Her second children's book was published in 1988 under the title Sweet Creek Holler . She celebrated her greatest success with the 1996 Belle Prater's Boy . Her fifth book, Memories of Summer , was mentioned in 2001 on the ALA Best Books for Young Adults list . All three books were translated by Bettine Braun and published by the Stuttgarter Verlag Freies Geistesleben & Urachhaus . Her books have also been translated into Dutch , Chinese , French , Polish and Japanese , among others .
