The Rutka ( Russian Рутка ; Mari Рӹде ) is a 153 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .

course

The Rutka rises in the northeast of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast near the border with Kirov Oblast and the Republic of Mari El . From here it flows first in a south and south-westerly direction through a landscape characterized by villages and agricultural areas.

After passing the village of Staraya Rutka, she crosses the border with the Republic of Mari El. Here forests dominate the landscape of the sparsely populated northwestern autonomous republic. The river flows here in a predominantly southerly direction and crosses the western Mari El before reaching the Cheboksarsk reservoir near Kosmodemjansk , to which the Volga is dammed.

The Rutka is frozen on average from late November / early December to April. It is very popular with boat hikers .
