Ryan Mendoza

Ryan Mendoza (born October 29, 1971 in New York City ) is an American artist. He lives and works in Naples and Berlin . Mendoza combines the technique of old masters with contemporary themes in his paintings. In mid-2016 he was ranked 147th of the 500 most successful US artists in the Artnet database at auctions who were born after 1966.

He also organizes performance art ; mostly with a political statement. Ryan and his wife Fabia Mendoza , who was eight months pregnant at the time, organized a performance in 2012 to show their solidarity with the Russian punk band Pussy Riot . They were then arrested in Naples.

The White House

In 2016, Mendoza dismantled a single family home in Detroit , Michigan and shipped it to Europe. Designed by him, painted white, illuminated and played with music, it was first presented at Art Rotterdam 2016. The White House has been on view as a permanent installation at the Verbeke Foundation in Belgium since the end of 2016 .

The White House project caused a media hype and sparked a lively political discussion. Mendoza told the press that with this project he was trying to gain access to his identity as an American after living in Europe for 24 years. The house he used for his White House installation was given to him by a Detroit friend for this project. The story of the Thomas family, who lived in it for generations, was part of this installation.

The remains of the White House were demolished in March 2016. Mendoza paid twice for the demolition, according to press reports, after another media controversy arose over why the remains of the house were not demolished for months. Fabia Mendoza's documentary The White House from 2016 tells the story of this project.

The Invitation

In June 2016 Mendoza painted two houses in Detroit's crime-ridden Brightmoor district for his installation The Invitation . Bullet holes in the facades of the two houses formed the names of the two candidates for US presidency, Trump and Clinton. Mendoza invited both candidates to spend the night in his installation as a sign of their integrity. John O'Malley, a 60-year-old male nurse with cancer, lives between the two previously abandoned and derelict houses. He and Brightmoor activist Jonathan Pommerville had asked Mendoza to draw attention to O'Malley's difficult situation.

Rosa Parks House

Rosa Parks House 2017 in Berlin

In the summer of 2016, Rhea McCauley, niece of American civil rights icon Rosa Parks , donated the house where her aunt lived in Detroit from 1957 to 1959 . Mrs. McCauley had previously bought back the badly dilapidated and abandoned wooden house from the city of Detroit for USD 500 to protect it from the planned demolition.

“I know she has streets named after her and medals and awards, but I'm talking about truly understanding the significance of Auntie Rosa […]. And I have talked to young people and they don't even know who my aunt is. And that's a shame. It's not their fault, but we as a country need to acknowledge, and if we can't, you know, I'll take her where she is acknowledged. "

“I know streets are named after her and medals and prizes, but I speak of a true understanding of the meaning of Auntie Rosa […]. And I've talked to young people and they don't even know who my aunt is. That's a shame. It's not their fault, but we as a country have to recognize your heritage and, if we can't, well, I'll take it to where it is recognized. "

In 18 days Mendoza dismantled the house piece by piece with a group of volunteers in Detroit and shipped it to Berlin, where he rebuilt it - mostly alone - at Wriezener Strasse 19 in the Berlin district of Gesundbrunnen .

Mrs. McCauley and Mendoza both hoped that one day the house could return to its rightful home, the United States.

In early 2018 it was dismantled in Berlin and was then exhibited on the premises of Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island . In June 2018 it was announced that the building was to be auctioned at Guernsey's New York auction house .

Other Projects

In the spring of 2017, Mendoza painted the facade of a residential building in Moscow in the colors of the American flag. This street art project was coupled with a 50-part photo project Putin, my Putin , in which the American activist Rose McGowan participated and which was exhibited by the Berlin gallery Camera Work.
