The diterpene derivative ryanodine is a whitish light-sensitive substance that is soluble in methanol and ethanol . It is an ingredient of the Ryania speciosa plant from South America and has been used as an insecticide for around 200 years .

Even small amounts of ryanodine are toxic to humans. It binds to the ryanodine receptors named after him , which are mainly found in the striated skeletal and cardiac muscles and causes calcium to flow out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum . In the case of intoxication , continuous muscle contractions occur .
