Sângeorge (German: Sanktgeorg , Sankt-Georg , Hungarian: Tárnokszentgyörgy ) is a village in Timiș County , Banat , Romania . Sângeorge belongs to the municipality of Birda .
Geographical location
Sângeorge is located in Timiș County, 50 kilometers from Timișoara , halfway between Deta and Gătaia .

history
The first documentary mention dates back to 1319, when Villa Sancti Georgy belonged to the Caraș County. In the papal tithe lists of 1332-1337 the church belonged to the parish Caraşova . In the Middle Ages the village was mentioned in writing several times.
On the Josephine land survey of 1717, the place Sankt Georg is registered with 30 houses and belonged to the district Ciacova . After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . The official place name was Tárnokszentgyörgy . The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the Banat being divided into three parts, whereby Sângeorge fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
Until the Second World War, the Serbs formed the absolute majority of the villagers. In 1924 Romanians from Turda and Igriș were settled in Sângeorge . Today the village is mostly inhabited by Romanians.
