history

Karasow was first mentioned in the papal tithe lists in 1332 , when the community belonged to the diocese of Csanád . In 1358 there were two villages Nog Carassou and Kyskarassou (German: Groß Carassou and Kleinkarassou ). In 1550 Oppido Crasso and in 1673 Karasevo appear in the documents of the time. In the records of the scholar Marsigli (1690-1700) the place Karasevo belongs to the district Werschetz. From 1528 to 1718 the Banat was under Ottoman rule . Carașova belonged to the Lugosch-Caransebescher Banat from 1526 to 1658 and to the Temescher Vilâyet from 1658 to 1718 .

On the Josephine land survey of 1717, the place Karasova is registered with 400 houses and was the third largest city of the Banat, after Timișoara and Caransebeş . Carasova is noted on the Griselini card from 1776 . After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718), when the Banat became a Habsburg crown domain , Karaschowa was part of the Temescher Banat .

After the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . In the first decade of the 20th century, the law for the Magyarization of place names (Ga. 4/1898) was applied, including the Magyarization of all toponyms on maps , land register extracts and city maps . The official place name was Krassóvár . The Hungarian place names remained valid until the administrative reform of 1923 in the Kingdom of Romania , when the Romanian place names were introduced.

The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the triple division of the Banat, as a result of which Carașova fell to the Kingdom of Romania .

Carașova fortress

The history of the village is closely related to the history of the medieval fortress. The fortress, the ruins of which can still be seen today and is known under the name Turski Grat (German: Turkish fortress ), was located on a 450 meter high rock and was first mentioned in 1200 as Castra regalis . Over the centuries, the fortress appears as follows: 1247 Castrum Crassou , 1266 Castrum de Karassou , 1333 Karasow , 1358 Castrum regiae maiestatis Crassou , 1389, 1390, 1437 and 1520 Castellani de Crassofew . In 1551 the fortress was conquered by the Turks , only to be liberated again in 1595. After that, the fortress lost its strategic importance and was no longer visible.
