Over the centuries the place name appeared under different spellings: 1437 Tygvan , 1690–1700 Tikván , 1799 Nagy-Tikván , 1808 Tikván , Tikvánul mare , 1851 Nagy-Tikván , 1913 Nagytikvány , 1919 Ticvaniul-mare .
The first written mention of the name Tygwan comes from the year 1437. In 1555 the predium Thykwo was recorded in the historical documents. The historian Marsigli mentioned in his records from 1690-1700 the village of Tikvan , which belonged to the Werschetz district .

After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat . On the Mercy map from 1723 the place Groß-Dikvan is inhabited, at the same time the name Mali-Dikvan (Ticvaniu Mic, Klein-Tikvan) appears for the first time .
The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the Banat being divided into three , whereby Ticvaniu Mare fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
