Topleț (German: Töplitz , Hungarian: Toplecz , Csernahévíz , Serbo-Croatian: Toplec ) is a municipality in the Caraș-Severin District , Banat , Romania . The village of Bârza also belongs to the municipality of Topleț .
Geographical location
Topleț is located in the southwest of the Caraș-Severin County, on the European route E70 , 8 km from Orșova and 8 km from Băile Herculane , close to the border with the Mehedinți County .

history
The first written mention of Tople comes from Frigyes Pesty in 1436 . The name Toplec comes from Slavic and means warm .
On the Josephine land survey of 1717 the place Dopliz is registered. After the Peace of Passarowitz (1718) the village was part of the Habsburg crown domain Temescher Banat .
In 1768 the "Wallachian Battalion" of the Banat military border was set up. It had four companies and 2,383 border guards in Topleț, Globurău , Ilova and Ohaba-Bistra, now part of Oțelu Roșu . In 1775 the "Wallachian Battalion" was combined with the "Illyrian Regiment" to form the "Wallachian-Illyrian Regiment".
As a result of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise (1867), the Banat was annexed to the Kingdom of Hungary within the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary . The official place name was Toplecz . 1908 Csernahévíz becomes the official name.
The Treaty of Trianon on June 4, 1920 resulted in the Banat being divided into three parts , whereby Topleț fell to the Kingdom of Romania .
Banat Sfinx
The Banat Sphinx , also called the Sfinx of Topleț , is a megalith in the Cernatal , on the area of the municipality of Topleț. The 16 meter high and 8 meter wide boulder was created over time by wind and water erosion . It owes its name to the resemblance to a human head. The Banat Sphinx was declared a natural monument in 1982 and has been part of the Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park since 1990 .
