São Salvador da Aramenha is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Marvão . 1426 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

In the Ammaia archaeological site

The area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Age. The Romans who arrived in the 2nd century also subjected the Celtic village communities living here to the Castro culture . The fertile area was used extensively by the Romans and a city called Ammaia was created. She was raised to Civitas and later to Municipium . After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century and the fall of the Roman province of Lusitania , the city increasingly fell into disrepair.

The Moors , who had been advancing on the Iberian Peninsula since 711 , met a semi-deserted village on a hill, which they appropriately called the Hill of Ammaia. In 884 Ibn Marwan founded the present-day town of Marvão not far away, and the original Ammaia was increasingly forgotten. The place called São Salvador da Aramenha is still part of Marvão today .

Culture and sights

In addition to sacred buildings, there are ancient monuments in the community, including a Roman bridge in Portagem and a group of originally Roman lime kilns . The community is particularly known for the Roman excavation sites of Ammaia.
