Santo António das Areias is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Marvão . It has a population of 1102 (as of June 30, 2011).
history
The prehistoric settlement of the area is documented, in addition to evidence of an abandoned Castro culture settlement , especially through Neolithic grave sites. The most important of these Antas is now in the Museu Etnológico in Lisbon . Since then, people have probably only lived here permanently in the 5th century, after the fall of the nearby Roman city of Ammaia (today São Salvador da Aramenha ). The place was not officially documented for the first time until 1569 , as an already independent municipality. At the beginning of the 18th century the community grew and, according to the church chronicle, now developed a more lively life of its own.
Santo António das Areias has been part of the Marvão County since the municipality was founded, with an interruption from 1895 to 1898 when it was part of Castelo de Vide .
Culture and sights
The municipality is located in the nature reserve of the Serra de São Mamede . Hiking trails traverse the mountainous and forested area, and lookout points offer sweeping views.
The place has a listed bullring (Portuguese: Praça de Touros ) of the third category, in which the large corridas of the country do not take place, but regular annual bullfights .
Other architectural monuments of the place are some public buildings, religious buildings , stone fountains, a bridge, and the hotel building Hotel Boutique O Poejo , which is now a four-star hotel and was the first hotel in the district in 1919.
The Água da Cuba menhir can be seen in the municipality , along with five megalithic structures called Antas . The municipal multifunctional sports hall, the municipal swimming pool, the municipality's football field, a weekly market on the Praça de Hortaliça ( Eng .: Square of the Vegetables), and a lookout point (Portuguese: Miradouro ) are further attractions for residents and visitors. There is also a campsite in the municipality, in Asseiceira.
