Sé is a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Portalegre . 10,712 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Portalegre was divided into seven inner-city parishes until it became the seat of the newly created diocese Portalegre in 1549 (since 1956 Diocese Portalegre-Castelo Branco ). As a result, the communities were merged and reorganized. This resulted in the two inner city communities São Lourenço and Sé. Sé united the southern half of the city, while São Lourenço comprised the northern half of the urban area.
In the course of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , Sé was merged with São Lourenço to form the municipality of União das Freguesias da Sé e São Lourenço .
Attractions
The eponymous cathedral ( Portuguese : Sé ) is located in the municipality. The community's numerous other architectural monuments include the modernist Café Alentejano , the Museu Municipal , the Municipal Museum , which is housed in a former seminary , the Instituto Politécnico de Portale , the historic municipal market hall ( Mercado Municipal ), the medieval castle complex, and the social housing blocks of the Estado -Novo regime, and a large number of sacred buildings , public fountains, and town houses from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The Plátano de Portalegre is also in the municipality. The tree canopy of the plane tree planted in 1838 is considered the largest on the Iberian Peninsula .
