The southern province ( French Province Sud ) is one of three provinces of New Caledonia . It encompasses the southern part of the island of Grande Terre (area 7303 km²), offshore islands to the south, including Île des Pins , and distant islands in the southeast, including Walpole and the Matthew and Hunter Islands claimed by Vanuatu . The provincial seat of government is in Nouméa , while the French state provides services in La Foa .
In the provincial parliament, known as the Assemblée de Province , there are 40 people elected by the population, 32 of whom are also sent as mandataries to the New Caledonia Congress in accordance with the Nouméa Agreement .
The province was formed on the basis of the Matignon Agreement in 1988 .

The municipality of Poya has been divided between the Northern Province and the Southern Province since 1999 . The population lives mainly in the northern part of the northern province.
