The SŽD series ВЛ40 у (German transcription WL 40 U ) of the Soviet Railways (SŽD) are electric locomotives created by reconstructions from the SŽD series ВЛ80 especially for passenger train service on main roads with alternating current . They were and will be delivered from 2004 onwards in the Zaporizhia and Lviv repair shops by converting the ВЛ80 as single-section locomotives equipped with two driver's cabs. Since the locomotive is being rebuilt and operated in the Ukraine , it should, strictly speaking, be referred to as the UZ series ВЛ40 у .

At the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, a deficit of passenger train electric locomotives for operation on routes with alternating current became noticeable on the Ukrainian Railways . This was due, on the one hand, to the decommissioning of old machines of the SŽD series ВЛ60 , and on the other hand to the electrification of further route sections. So it came very often to the covering of passenger trains by the electric locomotives of the series ВЛ80 of the depot Snamyanka and Kotovsk of the Odeska Salisnyzja as well as Koziatyn of the Southwest Railway . As pure freight locomotives, these machines were often not equipped with the systems for electrical heating of the wagon train and the electropneumatic brake for passenger trains . Because of these problems, it was decided to convert some locomotives of the ВЛ80 T series into a single-section locomotive with two driver's cabs and facilities for the operation of passenger trains. The new locomotives were to be given the designation ВЛ40 у .

The modernization was carried out by the repair works in Zaporizhia and Lviv. The locomotives received a new box, the locomotives in Zaporozhye one with a driver's cab and driver's desks of the type ČS 8 , the machines from Lviv a structure with flatter front sections , similar to the ЭП1 and a driver's desk that was constructed similarly to the SŽD series ВЛ80. The vehicle part, the power scheme with the main controller ЭКГ ‑ 8Ж ( EKG-8SCH ) and the scheme of the low-voltage systems were taken over from the ВЛ80, completed by the establishment of a resistance brake . This entailed a decrease in a number of devices, blocks of brake fittings and devices for switching the brake switches.

The driving switch, the number of positions of regulation and levels of weakening of the excitation, the display of the positions remained the same as with the donor locomotives. With the use of high quality diodes , the rectifier unit boxes per bogie could be reduced from two to one. The scheme of the chain of auxiliary machines has been completely rebuilt; a phase splitter replaced the start-up capacitors , the auxiliary machines and drive motors АЭ92 ( AE92 ) were replaced by the machines with drive motors НВА ‑ 55 ( NWA-55 ) used in the locomotives ЭП1 , two centrifugal motor fans and two motors were installed on each locomotive -Compressors ВУ ‑ 3,5 ( WU-3,5 ) installed.

Operation of the ВЛ40 у

After operational trials, the locomotives were very suitable for operation on flat profiles, e.g. For example, on the Kiev - Nizhyn - Chernihiv sections of the South-North Railway, they were even used to guide freight trains. Only when driving heavy trains with 15 to 20 passenger wagons on the hilly terrain of the Odeska Salisnyzja did the performance limits of the locomotive become apparent; here their covering provoked negative reviews from the locomotive brigades.

Now the locomotives ВЛ 40 у are used in the operating departments of the Chernihiv and Shmerynka depots of the South-North Railway , Podilsk of the Odeska Zaliznytsia and Lviv- Zapad of the Lviv Railway Company. Most of the locomotives are used in the Shmerynka and Lviv depots, mainly locomotives that were delivered in Lviv run here, while the Podilsk and Chernihiv depots have locomotives that were delivered in Zaporizhia . In order to distinguish the locomotives according to the manufacturer, the locomotives have somewhat peculiar names, e.g. B. the ВЛ 40 у -1384.1 . The meaning of this designation is not clear from the Internet.
