The SA Agulhas II is a South African research ship designed as an icebreaker . She is the successor to the icebreaker SA Agulhas, which is also used in Cape Town . The ship was built in Rauma , Finland and was commissioned in April 2012. On April 4, 2012, the ship left the port of Rauma in the direction of the new home port Cape Town. It arrived there for the first time on May 3, 2012.

The SA Agulhas II will be used to supply South African research stations. These include the SANAE IV station in Antarctica, the research station on Marion Island in the Indian Ocean and the weather station on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, meteorological and oceanographic measurements are carried out along the way, including hydrographic measurements with a CTD rosette along the prime meridian in the southern ocean . She regularly drives to the Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha .
