The SA Agulhas is used to supply South African research stations. These include the SANAE IV station in Antarctica, the research station on Marion Island in the Indian Ocean and the weather station on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The SA Agulhas also brings mail, cargo and passengers to Tristan da Cunha .

The SA Agulhas can stay at sea for around 90 days, its maximum travel distance is 21,000 nm .
