The SA Agulhas is a South African research ship designed as an icebreaker .

It was built in 1977 by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard in Shimonoseki , Japan .

Calls

The SA Agulhas is used to supply South African research stations. These include the SANAE IV station in Antarctica, the research station on Marion Island in the Indian Ocean and the weather station on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The SA Agulhas also brings mail, cargo and passengers to Tristan da Cunha .

The ship is 109.5 m long and 18.05 m wide, has a draft of 6 m and a displacement of 5,353 t. The crew consists of 40 people in addition, the ship offers space for up to 98 scientists. The measurement of the ship is 6,122 GT and 2,588 NRZ.

Two six - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines (Mirrlees KMR6) with a total output of 4,476 kW, which act on a variable-pitch propeller via a gearbox, serve as the drive system . The cruising speed is 12.5  kn . A bow thruster of 750 HP and a stern thruster of 500 HP are used for better maneuverability . The SA Agulhas can stay at sea for around 90 days, its maximum travel distance is 21,000  nm .
