The SG Mannheim (Spielgemeinschaft Mannheim) is a basketball syndicate from Mannheim . It was founded in 2003 and currently consists of the Ball im Quadrat club and the basketball departments of TSV Mannheim and DJK Mannheim . With over 300 active members, the SG Mannheim is the third largest basketball club in Baden-Württemberg. The first men's team has been playing in the 1st Regionalliga Südwest since the 2018/19 season, the first women's team in the regional league.

history

Before 1997, the basketball departments of Post SG Mannheim , DJK Käfertal-Waldhof and TSV Mannheim competed in Mannheim. All clubs tried very hard to expand their youth and senior work in the field of competitive sports, but quickly reached their capacity limits. Due to the mutual poaching of players, it was also difficult for the clubs to advance their sporting development and to move up to higher leagues. This led to a rethink and in 1997 the basketball departments of the DJK Käfertal-Waldhof and Post SG Mannheim decided to cooperate in the sporting field. In order to set the course for successful youth work at the same time, the Friends' Association Basketball Rhein-Neckar eV was founded.

After six years of successful cooperation within the framework of the cooperation, the Post SG Mannheim and DJK Mannheim founded the Spielgemeinschaft Mannheim in 2003, which was limited to the basketball departments. The aim was not only to bundle strengths in sport, but also to create a common infrastructure and administration. TSV Mannheim joined the game community with its basketball department one year later (2004). After Post SG Mannheim left the syndicate in 2007, the newly founded association Ball im Quadrat eV took its place.

The syndicate currently consists of:

  • Ball im Quadrat eV
  • DJK Mannheim eV (basketball department)
  • TSV Mannheim von 1846 eV (basketball department)

The focus of the SG Mannheim is above all on the establishment of good youth work in both male and female areas. There are a total of 14 youth teams from U8 to U20. The SG Mannheim is also involved in the cooperation of the NBBL team Basket College Rhein-Neckar . In the senior area, 6 men's teams and 3 women's teams are registered.

The first logo from 2003 consists of a basketball surrounded by small squares that together make a large square. It symbolizes the anchoring of basketball in the middle of the square city of Mannheim. The basketball is surrounded by the words "SG Mannheim Basketball" . In 2011 the logo was revised. It received a 3D look, as well as curved lettering and lighter orange tones.

In 2014, the desire for a complete redesign of the logo grew louder and louder in the gaming community. At the initiative of club members, a team consisting of 6 dedicated club members developed a new logo in cooperation with graphic designer Rafael Schulz from summer 2014. This was finally presented on March 1, 2015 under the motto "A new era begins" in front of 800 club members and spectators in the Mannheim GBG hall. The foundation of the logo is made up of half a basketball and the abbreviations of the three sponsoring associations of the gaming community. The central element is the "SG Mannheim" logo , from which the silhouette of the Mannheim water tower protrudes as the symbol of the city of Mannheim. A special feature is the integration of the club's motto "One Team" , which symbolically connects basketball with Mannheim in the logo.

Since the 2004/05 season, the first team has been playing in the Regional League Baden-Württemberg (formerly Regionalliga Südwest-Süd) of the BBW, which corresponds to the fifth highest division in German basketball. The league describes the transition from the performance-oriented amateur area of the upper leagues to the semi-professional 1. Regionalliga Südwest, the fourth-highest German division.

Despite placing in the lower third of the table in the seasons 2004/05 to 2006/07, the team was always able to hold the class. The main performers in these years were Andreas Steckbauer , Oliver Komarek , Christian Kuhn , Albert Kuppe , Ignazio De Ferrari , Wolfgang Otters , Florian Erdinger and Tobias Specht . For the 2007/08 season, the squad around Otters, Erdinger and De Ferrari was then significantly strengthened. With Ronald Lenair Merriwether , Jonathan Tunga and Bruce Zabukovic three strong offensive players joined the team. The season was very successful and three game days before the end of the 2007/08 season the conditions for the championship in the Regionalliga Südwest-Süd were very good. The team has only had two defeats to date (both against TV Derendingen) and 34: 4 points, followed closely by BSG Basket Ludwigsburg with a score of 32: 6. However, the SG surprisingly lost the next two games in a row, while Ludwigsburg fulfilled its mandatory task with two wins and took the lead with 2 points in the table. With the direct duel between the two teams on the last match day, the season ended with a showdown in Mannheim. The SG Mannheim had won the first leg with 68:59, whereby the victory in the last game meant the championship and promotion to the 1st Regionalliga Südwest at the same time. In a hard-fought and exciting game, the BSG Basket Ludwigsburg finally prevailed with 84:80 and the SG Mannheim missed promotion to the 1st regional league as runner-up.

In the 2013/14 season, the SG Mannheim had to be the penultimate in the relegation against the TV Derendingen. Derendingen won the first leg with 90:85. In the second leg, Marcel Maringer became the match winner for SG Mannheim, who contributed 30 points to the 69:54 victory and thus secured the league. Head coach Thorsten Schnieder then resigned for professional reasons. For the 2014/15 season, Peter Eberhardt then took over the team. Eberhardt had already trained the team as part of the cooperation from 2001 to 2003. He was also instrumental in founding the SG Mannheim. In the first year after his return, the SG Mannheim BBW cup winners 2015. In the 2016/17 season they celebrated the runner-up for the second time and ended up just behind the master Crailsheim Merlins 2. SG Mannheim finally celebrated the greatest success in the club's history to date in the 2017/18 season. With a record of 24-2, Head Coach Peter Eberhardt's team won the championship in the Baden-Württemberg Regionalliga for the first time and thus made it to the Regionalliga Südwest.

With Max Bohrmann, a former youth national player, is currently in the squad.

The first women's team of SG Mannheim started in the Oberliga West in the 2006/07 season. After a successful debut season with second place, the championship and the associated promotion to the regional league could be celebrated a year later. After a difficult 2008/09 season in the regional league, however, the team had to return to the league after one year as penultimate. The seasons between 2009 and 2016 were very mixed in the following years. The team either played for the championship or had to fight to stay in the league.

In the 2014/15 season, Sven Schumacher took over the post as head coach of the women's team, who also remained active as head coach of the second men's team in the major league. After a difficult first year in sport, the team fought with SSC Karlsruhe for the title in the Oberliga West in the 2015/16 season . Although the athletic qualification for the regional league was not achieved with second place, the team was offered a starting place in the regional league as a "replacement" , which was also accepted. However, the team had to record some departures before the start of the season, so that Coach Schumacher was only able to play with a very decimated squad. But that was not enough to survive in the regional league and so the women 1 came back to the league after only one regional league season and without a win. After the 5th place in the Oberliga Baden in the 2017/18 season, the team was canceled due to the departure of many players. As of the 2018/19 season, there will only be one team in the women's division that will play in the Rhein-Neckar regional league.

GBG hall

The GBG hall at Herzogenried has been the home of SG Mannheim since the 2005/06 season . The hall was completed in 2005 and inaugurated in November 2005. The construction costs amounted to 5.2 million euros. At the same place, the Carl-Diem-Halle, built in 1965, was demolished due to serious safety deficiencies. From 2005 to 2012 the MWS Grundstücksverwaltungsgesellschaft gave the hall its name, which is why the hall was named MWS-Halle . The hall has had its current name since May 2012.

The 3-part sports hall is suitable for school and club sports as well as basketball, soccer, handball and volleyball. Depending on the seating, the audience capacity is between 1,400 and 2,000 seats and standing. In addition to the home games of the parent clubs SG Mannheim (basketball) and VSG Mannheim (volleyball), major events such as the Albert Schweitzer tournament , the MM Morgen Masters or the Mannheim Fight Night take place on a regular basis .

Other training halls, which also serve as alternative halls for home games, are the Bertha-Benz-Halle and the Schwetzingerstadt sports hall .
