History and buildings

Old stock exchange

The social court was founded on January 1st, 1954. At first it was housed in the old stock exchange building in square E 4. After a short time, it moved into today's domicile in square P 6 on Mannheimer Planken . The sculpture field in the inner courtyard was made by Renate Hoffleit , who won the design competition in 1991.

In 2003/04 there were plans to reduce the number of social courts in Baden-Württemberg and to dissolve the social court in Mannheim. Other considerations were to combine social and administrative jurisdiction. Here too, the Mannheim Social Court would have been dissolved and the district would have been attached to the Karlsruhe Administrative Court . Neither plan was realized. Instead, with the transfer of matters relating to social assistance and the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act on January 1, 2005, the Social Court was given expanded powers.
