description

The gold loach is a small fish, usually 8 to 12, at most 14 centimeters long. Its long, slender body has the typical shape of a bottom fish, that is, it is somewhat flattened in profile at the bottom and arched towards the top. The front body of sexually mature males is particularly thick. It is round in cross section. It is dark marbled on the upper side, the flanks are usually light to yellowish-brown and show the typical golden sheen. Along the sideline there are large, dark spots with a blurred edge. The small mouth is located under side of the head (is therefore inferior ), above the upper jaw sit six short barbels . The anterior nostril is short and tubular in shape. A short, double thorn attaches under the eye, which the fish can fold out for defense. All fins of the golden wolffish show only soft rays . The pectoral fins are set quite far behind the gill covers. In the female, the first ray is somewhat thickened. The attachment of the abdominal fins is typically a little in front of that of the dorsal fin, which consists of eight to ten rays. The anal fin has seven to nine rays. The caudal fin is not forked and consists of 14 soft rays. On the underside of the tail stalk there is a weak fat keel. There are 170 to 200 very small round scales in a row . Eight pharyngeal teeth are arranged in a row on each of the pharyngeal bones .

Distribution, habitat and biology

It is a fish of fast flowing waters that mainly inhabits the upper and middle reaches of tributaries of the Black Sea . It occurs in the Danube , Kamchija , Don , Kuban , Aras , Sefid Rud , Hari Rud and Murgab . Usually it stays directly on the bottom and looks for small invertebrates that serve it as food. There it also lays its eggs between stones and plants from May to July.
