Sabine Heymann

Sabine Heymann (born December 17, 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German cultural journalist, theater critic and translator. From 2001 to 2017 she was managing director of the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) at the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU).

Life

As early as 1970, so even during her school years at Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Giessen , Sabine Heymann began working as a journalist: as a freelancer in the local section of Giessen Allgemeine Zeitung , where she one after graduation 1971-1973 editorial traineeship completed and up at the beginning of her studies worked as an editor in the features section. From 1974 to 1980 she studied German and Romance languages ​​at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . During her studies she did internships at the NDR and the hr (theater adaptation Käthchen von Heilbronn , director: Peter Beauvais ), wrote cultural and theater reviews for the Frankfurter Rundschau and produced radio and television programs for cultural programs on the Hessian Broadcasting Company. In 1981 she took over as assistant director to Peter Beauvais for the television film Der Kunst Fehler .

In 1981 Sabine Heymann began her work as a cultural correspondent in Rome for the Frankfurter Rundschau, Theater heute and Die Deutsche Bühne as well as the radio stations hr, WDR and Deutschlandfunk . In 1995 she returned to Germany and went to the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn, where she worked as a curator of accompanying programs for the exhibitions Sarkis, Im Lichte des Halbmonds, Moderna Museet Stockholm, Claes Oldenburg and Future Garden until 1996 . From 1996–1998 she was personal advisor to the President of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen, from 1998–2001 as a media advisor, she played a key role in setting up the Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) there, of which she was managing director from 2001 to 2017. She provides information about the founding and development of this research center in the ZMI video Three questions to Sabine Heymann. She continued her journalistic activities even after her return from Italy (Theater heute, Der Tagesspiegel and Frankfurter Rundschau).

Sabine Heymann translates theater texts, fiction and non-fiction from Italian, French, Spanish and English. As a connoisseur of the theater scene in Italy and China, she has participated in numerous international festivals, projects and conferences as a scientific and artistic advisor and dramaturge. She led teaching assignments and lectures a. to the Free University of Berlin, the Universities of Mainz, Frankfurt / Main, Osnabrück, Marburg and the Institutes for German Studies and Applied Theater Studies at the University of Gießen, the University of Pavia , the Shanghai Theater Academy , the Confucius Institute Hamburg and Frankfurt, several times to the German Italian center for European excellence Villa Vigoni (Lake Como), at Goethe Institutes , theater academies and theaters in Germany, Europe, the USA and China.

In April 2017, Sabine Heymann, together with Cao Kefei and Christoph Lepschy, published the book Contemporary Theater in China , which gives a comprehensive insight into contemporary Chinese theater.

Awards (in selection)

  • In December 2018, the “Kulturfonds der Société Suisse des Auteurs (SSA)” awarded Sabine Heymann a scholarship for the translation of Enrico Bernard's theater text La Voragine (Die Grube) from Italian into German.
  • Stefano Massini's piece 7 minutes. Works council ("7 minuti. Consiglio di fabbrica", Lauke-Verlag) was translated by Sabine Heymann and directed by Carole Lorang (co-production of the Théâtre des Capucins Luxembourg and the State Theater Mainz, premiere there on November 4, 2017) Nominated by nachtkritik.de for the Nachtkritik-Theatertreffen 2018 as one of the most important productions of 2017.
  • Massinis  7 minutes. Works council received the Monica Bleibtreu Prize for the contemporary drama category in the aforementioned translation by Sabine Heymann and the production by Werner Schretzmeier at Theaterhaus Stuttgart at the Privattheatertage 2018 in Hamburg.
  • Stefano Massini's drama An Unreeducable Woman (“Donna non rieducabile”, Lauke-Verlag) achieved first place among the 2015 EuroDram finalists in Sabine Heymann's translation of 70 entries from 22 countries.
  • The theater text Variations on the Kraepelin Model or The Semantic Field of the Rabbit Braised Roast by Davide Carnevali (Rowohlt Theater) received the radio play prize from Deutschlandradio Kultur in the translation by Sabine Heymann at the Theatertreffen Berlin 2009 (Stückemarkt). The text was broadcast as a radio play in 2010.
  • The non-fiction book The Secrets of Rome (Osburg Verlag, Berlin 2009) by Corrado Augias was selected by the jury of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the NDR in July 2009 as the non-fiction book of August in the translation by Sabine Heymann .
