from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) is an interdisciplinary media culture research center at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , which deals with the concept of interactivity and the various aspects of interactive digital media .

The ZMI

The center for media and interactivity

The ZMI deals with application-oriented and practical basic research on media-related issues from a media culture-scientific perspective. The focus is on the concept of interactivity and the diverse aspects of interactive digital media in science, society, politics, business and culture. As an interdisciplinary research facility at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (JLU), it covers a wide range of subject areas, e. B. from the subjects sociology / media sociology, general comparison of society, political science, history / modern history, contemporary history, Eastern European history, didactics of history, specialist journalism history; Art history ; Turkology ; Slavic Studies / Slavic Linguistics and Cultural Studies, Slavic Linguistics; German Studies / Historical Linguistics and Linguistic History of German, Language Theory and Description of Language, German Linguistics and Language Didactics, German Language and Media Didactics, Applied Linguistics and Computational Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, Modern German Literature and Cultural Studies, Holocaust Literature Department ; Romance studies / Spanish and Portuguese linguistics, didactics of Romance languages; English Studies / English Didactics, Applied Linguistics, English Linguistics and History of the English Language; Applied theater studies .

In addition, the ZMI offers scientists from the humanities disciplines who conduct research at JLU, advice in the field of “Digital Humanities” (in particular: computer-aided text analysis methods).

The advice and support of scientific project teams, educational institutions, companies and organizations in their digital and web-based activities is implemented by the entrepreneurial network ZMI-Transfer , an association of researchers who bundle their scientific expertise in a targeted and transparent manner for solution approaches in the area of the Internet and new media provide.

management

The managing director of the ZMI is (as of September 2016) Katrin Lehnen, professor for German media and language didactics, her deputy is Dorothée de Nève, professor for the political and social system of Germany. Scientific director is Dr. Jutta Hergenhan.

history

Around 1998, lecturers from Giessen University met for the first time from various faculties who dealt in different ways with communication and media science issues. What they had in common was an interest in all questions that had arisen from the deployment and use of media, and in particular digital, computer-mediated communication . The idea of bundling these activities in one center emerged from everyday university life. After three years of planning, the ZMI was founded in April 2001 by Claus Leggewie and Henning Lobin . Until 2007, Claus Leggewie was managing director of the ZMI. After Leggewie's departure to the KWI-Essen , Henning Lobin took over this function. In 2016 Katrin Lehnen became director of the ZMI.

In the first few years, questions of the individual, social, economic and artistic design and effect of media were dealt with from the point of view of interactivity . At that time, the focus of research activities on new media and the phenomenon of "interactivity" was something completely new. In addition, the ZMI initiated and coordinated activities in teaching, advanced training and science transfer.

In spring 2005 the ZMI entered a second phase. In the basic paper The ZMI in Transition , new objectives and working methods were set, with a permanent establishment of advanced basic research on the general topic of "interactivity" with interregional cooperation and international appeal. The ZMI began to deal with the “digital revolution” and its effects.

Until 2012, two topics determined the research interests of the ZMI: the effects of "medialization" on communicative cultural techniques in the cultural techniques project and their medialization and on the consequences of digitization for science communication in the research network Interactive Science - internal science communication via digital media .

From 2012 to 2015, the research focus shifted to the GeoBib project , the creation of a geo- referenced online bibliography of early German and Polish-language Holocaust and camp literature (1933–1949), as well as news to use , an investigation into the influence of regular newspaper reading young people in vocational training.

Since 2015, the ZMI has been focusing on literacy and education in the media society (LBM), focusing on the influence of media technology on education and the practices in dealing with writing and writing.

In the 2015/2016 winter semester, the JLU founded the Ludwig Börne Professorship, which is affiliated to the ZMI and is currently occupied by Claus Leggewie for a term of three years.

structure

The ZMI is an institutionalized network of research areas within Giessen University that deal with application- related and practice-oriented basic research on media-related issues. It is divided into five sections that support the implementation of cooperative research projects, but also conduct their own research and carry out a wide variety of activities: public lectures and lecture series, workshops, film series, conferences, publications and much more. Festivals, theater and film productions by students are also supported by individual sections.

Section 1: Power - Medium - Society

The interdisciplinary section focuses on power relations in dynamics between media and society. This includes topics such as media power, the protection of digital data, forms of participatory potential in social media and media use in social relationships such as families and households.

Section 2: Media and Didactics

The section is interested in questions of “mediality” and “medialization” of cultural processes in the areas of literature, language and history as well as aspects of their didactic communication. Theoretical and empirical work on phenomena and artifacts in various media, such as literature, film, television, the web, etc. are developed. The focus is also on concepts for the acquisition and development of media competence in different learning contexts.

Section 3: Educational Linguistics

The research and teaching activities under " Educational Linguistics " deal with linguistic and political questions, concepts and models in connection with the description and analysis of language acquisition and language teaching processes . The focus is on multilingual concepts, digital media and computer-linguistic technologies in language analysis and in teaching and learning foreign languages, as well as differentiating between oral and written language acquisition.

Section 4: Media and History

In the section, research projects on the history of the media and the communication and staging of history in the mass media are bundled. The focus is on interactivity, with media history being operated as (political) cultural history . At the center of interest: the interrelationships between the media and their perception by historical actors.

Section 5: Art and Media

The section unites disciplines that work at the interface between media theory , media criticism , cultural media competence and artistic practice with the media. Historically and systematically, theatrical, literary and cinematic forms of staging mediality are processed for this purpose . Special attention is paid to productions in new media , which are interpreted as a manifestation of a constantly updated "theatricalization of society".

Current research focus

Literacy and Education in the Media Society (FSP - LBM)

The research focus literacy and education in the media society (FSP - LBM) has been established as a long-term central theme for individual and collaborative research at the ZMI and the Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen since 2015. The media change due to digitization has an impact on the cultural interpretation and the social negotiation of the concepts of education and literacy . Accordingly, the central theme of the focus is the influence of media technologies on the shaping of educational concepts and the practices in dealing with writing and writing. The associated technological, social and cultural change is examined from a structural, historical and applied perspective. The reference systems for the studies represent the media of education, infrastructures and institutions as well as social structures and processes that are affected by this change. The diverse constellations of formal and informal learning, the change in academic and science-based educational conceptions and processes as well as the spatial, historical and social diversity of educational practices and conceptions are examined more closely. These and other questions are addressed as part of a joint research activity by the approximately 20 participating scientists at JLU in three forums:

I: educational media and media of education

II: Medialization and digitization of science

III: Culturality and contextuality of literacy and education

The ZMI takes on the organization of the research focus with the scientific administration and the initiation of research projects.

Ongoing research projects

Virtual reconstructions in transnational research environments

Using the example of two destroyed East Prussian baroque castles, a four-language web portal is being created as part of the project. From an art-historical and information technology perspective as well as from the point of view of the " e-humanities" , criteria and standards are to be further developed with the portal, how 3D object reconstructions are to be documented and implemented in the research context. The project reacts to the special requirements for historical and art-historical research and documentation in the cultural heritage of the former German region of East Prussia, whose architectural monuments are now considered irretrievably lost due to the war damage and neglect. This also includes palace and park complexes, of which the two almost completely destroyed baroque palaces Schlodien / Gładysze in Poland and Friedrichstein / Kamenka in the Kaliningrad Oblast are being reconstructed as part of the project. The project is led by the Herder Institute in cooperation with the Universities of Gießen and Greifswald and the Technical University of Łódź and funded by the Leibniz Association from July 2013 to June 2017.

Recently completed research projects (selection)

  • Sociology to go - learning with the smartphone (2015–2016): As part of the migr @ com sub-project Sociology to go - learning with the smartphone , an interactive educational trail that can be navigated with the smartphone was created to make it easier for students to get started with sociology . As a city with a long history of migration, the project made Gießen a place of learning and application of basic sociological concepts, theories and methods. The project is aimed at student teachers in the introductory phase. In the first phase of the project, the stations of the educational path were developed together with students. After the currently ongoing testing and application phase, the project is to be expanded to include other target groups and other content. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016 as part of the teaching innovation fund of the Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen.
  • Overcoming boundaries - creating closeness: Digital Coexistence in the Migration Society (migr @ com) (2014–2016): The joint project of the ZMI and the Institute for Sociology at the Justus Liebig University (JLU) was dedicated to the history and present of migration using media objects such as letters, cell phones, social media networks, photos and other artifacts. This aspect of the migration society was documented in a digital exhibition on the project website and made accessible to research. People who were separated from their families in the past or who are still living can use the Internet portal to share their experiences with others. The digital exhibition is constantly being stocked with personal items from various media by those affected. In 2014, the project won the university competition More than Bits and Bytes - Young Scientists Communicate their Work and was awarded 10,000 euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Science in Dialogue . The ZMI funded migr @ com from September 2014 to February 2016.
  • Eristic literacy - acquisition and development of academic text skills in German (2012–2016): The project examined the acquisition and possibilities of promoting text skills in the academic language of German among students of different linguistic and academic cultural backgrounds. The focus of research interest was the acquisition of controversial forms of text production, which play a central role in German university tradition for studying. For this purpose, writing and text routines have historically developed, for example in the area of presenting and discussing research positions, the mastery of which is fundamental for successful science communication . The text production of students from German studies with German as their first, second or third language as well as with different previous academic experience was examined. The SKOLA writing controversy laboratory serves as an innovative research tool - a web-based learning environment that was developed by the project team as part of the LOEWE focus on cultural techniques and their medialization . The aim of the project is to use this as a basis to further develop teaching concepts for German as a scientific language. The project was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation ( Deutsch Plus funding program - Science is multilingual ) and ran from August 2012 to September 2016.
  • GeoBib - Geo-referenced online bibliography of early Holocaust and camp literature (2012–2015): The aim of the GeoBib project was to collect and catalog scattered Holocaust and camp literature. In the project, an annotated and georeferenced online bibliography of early German and Polish-language Holocaust and camp literature (1933–1949) was created. The data was made accessible in digital form and linked with information about people, times and places. Collected documents were supplemented by reviews , secondary literature and image sources. As in a virtual atlas, “virtual maps” were made available online, providing information on places and places that are related to the genesis of literature. The joint project of the Justus Liebig University Gießen (JLU) and the Herder Institute Marburg, funded with around one million euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) , started in July 2012 and ended in June 2015.
  • Newspaper and training in Hessen - news to use (2012–2013): News to use investigated the influence daily newspaper reading has on young people in vocational training. In addition to reading the newspaper every day, the trainees worked through ten blocks of tasks on current reporting topics on a specially designed Internet portal over the entire duration of the project. As part of the free text question, the trainees should write their own texts - partly summaries, partly personal assessments or statements on current topics. In this way, not only the reading but also the writing skills of the project participants were sustainably trained. The Hessian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport and Regional Development (HMWVL) and the European Social Fund (ESF) for Germany funded the research project with around 126,000 euros. News to use was created by the Verband Hessischer Zeitungsverleger e. V. initiated and scientifically supervised by the ZMI from the point of view of text technology and language didactics. From 2012 to 2013, more than 700 trainees took part, who were supplied with almost 40 newspaper titles.
  • Cultural techniques and their medialization (2008–2012): The LOEWE focus (state offensive for the development of scientific and economic excellence) funded from July 2008 to June 2012 by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art (HMWK) with 3,722,000 euros explored multidisciplinary research Perspective the effects of the media-technological and social upheaval on communicative cultural techniques, in particular on reading and writing, research and archiving. The subject was the phenomenon that communicative cultural techniques change as processes, that these changes affect “cultural products” and that the social practices of dealing with them are constantly being adapted. The LOEWE focus combined linguistic , literary , cultural and historical approaches. In addition to the theoretical preoccupation with the phenomenon of medialization , the focus was also on possible application and practical references of theoretical research results. Henning Lobin from ZMI and Peter Haslinger from HI coordinated the project in cooperation with the Herder Institute Marburg (HI) and the Technical University of Central Hesse.
  • Interactive Science - internal science communication via digital media (2008–2011): The Interactive Science research association of the Universities of Giessen, Trier and Konstanz and the Vienna Institute for Technology Assessment researched the consequences of digitization for internal science communication from a multidisciplinary perspective. The research association combined linguistic, media, information and social science, historical and theater studies perspectives on this phenomenon and concentrated on the interactive potential of information and communication technologies on the basis of two previously little explored aspects: the collaborative and the performative dimension of internal scientific communication. The project network coordinated by Henning Lobin was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation from 2008 to 2011 with 990,000 euros as part of the Key Topics in the Humanities program .

A complete list of the ZMI's completed research projects can be found on the ZMI's homepage.

Ludwig Börne Professorship, Digital Humanities & ZMI Transfer

Ludwig Börne professorship

The Ludwig Börne Professorship, founded in 2015 and occupied by Claus Leggewie , is named after the writer and political thinker Carl Ludwig Börne , who received his doctorate in philosophy in Gießen in 1808 and who later critically examined the Franco-German relationship of his time in French exile committed to a Franco-German friendship. Börne became famous for his letters from Paris from 1830 to 1834 .

Claus Leggewie entered the Ludwig Börne Professorship in June 2016 with the lecture “New letters from Paris. Reversal of thrust in literary-political border traffic ”. It is the task of the Ludwig Börne professorship to observe the Franco-German relationship in the area of tension between Europe and the world community. In future, an annual Börne lecture on German-French topics will be organized. A lecture series by the JLU President on the subject of “America is different” will be curated by Claus Leggewie, which goes beyond Germany and France.

Digital humanities

Since it was founded in 2012, the aim of the ZMI office has been to establish " Digital Humanities " at the Justus Liebig University (JLU) together with scientists from the humanities disciplines . The Digital Humanities subject encompasses the application of computer-aided methods for working with digital resources such as text, images, audio and video. The aim of Digital Humanities is the differentiated and complex preparation and analysis of these resources, as well as ensuring their sustainable use. Professors and students are supported by advising and organizing workshops and tutorials in the application of computer-aided procedures in their work with digital texts, image, video and audio files. In addition, lectures on various topics from the field of digital humanities are organized in order to support the interaction and exchange between the humanities scholars at JLU and other academic institutions in Germany and the European Union.

ZMI transfer

ZMI-Transfer is an association of researchers who make their linguistic , media and social science skills available for problem-solving approaches in the areas of the Internet and new media . As a scientific partner and entrepreneurial network, ZMI-Transfer advises educational institutions, public and cultural institutions as well as companies. The thematic focuses include communication concepts , social media advice, e- and blended learning as well as text technology and competence on the Internet. The services of ZMI-Transfer are certified by the Hessian Prequalification Register (HPQR).

activities

As a meeting place for scientists, artists and the interested public, the spectrum of activities of the ZMI ranges from conferences and meetings with international participation to readings, workshops, colloquia, lectures, festivals and thematic film series.

With a variety of event types, the ZMI has repeatedly broken new ground to position science publicly. Examples of this in addition to the 2007 and 2011 aligned's Performing Science competitions u. a. Henning Lobin's series of events on the subject of “Reading and Writing in the Digital Age”, a subject that Lobin also explores in his book Engelbart's Dream . The events took place alongside the exhibition “Hamster Hipster Handy. Under the spell of the mobile phone ”in the Frankfurt Museum for Applied Arts. Lobin's book and the events aroused such great public interest that the news magazine Der Spiegel published the title “Faster, better, more sensual. The Future of Reading ”came out. The cover story is largely based on Engelbart's dream and an interview with Henning Lobin. The article follows the three “basic tendencies” that Lobin describes in his book: Reading will in future be more social, multimedia and hybrid. In addition, the ZMI organized the talk show “Science Lounge”.

The annual highlights of the sections include the Discourse Festival in Section 5, which places experimental and innovative concepts in the discourse on performative arts and their structures. Section 2 organizes the Gießen history-reading summer GeLeSo , at which well-known authors read from their works. In the lecture series Voices from Practice , organized by Section 4, practitioners from the media and culture sector talk about their professional careers, professional practice and the current challenges in the media and culture sector.

Publications

In addition to individual publications, the ZMI publishes the Interaktiva series in Campus-Verlag. The 12 volumes published so far (anthologies and monographs) deal with topics from the research areas “media” and “interactivity”, which are closely related to research projects, workshops and conferences of the ZMI.
