Sachnin ( Hebrew סח'נין, Arabic سخنين, DMG Saḫnīn ) is a small town in the northern district of Israel in the Galilee Mountains . It was declared a city in 1995. The current population is 31,057 (as of 2018), the majority of which are Arabs with Israeli citizenship. About 95% Muslim Arabs and 5% Christian Arabs live in Sakhnin, there are no Jewish residents in the city.

history

During the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, Sachnin surrendered to Israeli troops in an operation called "Dekel". After it was retaken by Arab soldiers, it fell back into Israeli hands only shortly afterwards in October 1948 without a fight. On March 30, 1976 (Yaum al-Ard translation: "Earth Day"), three Israeli Arabs were shot by the police in Sachnin while they demonstrated against the confiscation of 2,000 hectares of land.

In 2003, the soccer team FC Bnei Sachnin ( Arabic اتحاد أبناء سخنين) as the second Arab team managed to advance to the first Israeli football league. In 2004, FC Bnei Sachnin won the Israeli Cup and reached the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup . In the qualifying round they beat Albania's FK Partizani Tirana to win the UEFA Cup. In the first round of the UEFA Cup, however, she was eliminated against the English club Newcastle United . The club's then star, Abbas Suan , plays in the Israeli national team and scored the 1-1 equalizer in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland on March 30, 2005 . 2006 FC Bnei Sachnin rose from the second Israeli division and a year later again. At the end of the promotion season, a fourth place was enough for participation in the UEFA Intertoto Cup , in which the team failed in the third round with two narrow defeats at the Spanish representative Deportivo La Coruña .

FC Bnei Sachnin was the only Israeli first division club without a stadium in 2003, but donations from Qatar were used to build a stadium in Sachnin ( Doha Stadium ), which was inaugurated in 2005.

In January 2015 the “Arab Museum of Contemporary Art and Heritage” (AMOCAH) was opened. The museum was founded by the artists Avital Bar-Shay from Israel and Belu-Simion Fainaru from Romania. When it opened, the museum owned more than 2000 objects related to the regional Arab heritage and 200 other contemporary works. The museum covers a variety of genres, from drawings and paintings to sculpture, photography and multimedia.
