Safo is a rural community in the Madarounfa department in Niger .

geography

Safo is located in the greater Sudan landscape and borders the neighboring state of Nigeria in the southwest . The neighboring communities in Niger are Tibiri in the northwest, Sarkin Yamma in the north, Maradi in the northeast, Djiratawa in the east, Madarounfa in the southeast and Gabi in the south. There are 59 villages, ten hamlets and nine camps in the municipality. The main town of the rural community is the village of Safo. Other larger villages are Riadi and Soumarana .

The dry valley Goulbin Maradi runs through the municipality . The average annual rainfall in Safo is 507 millimeters, the number of rainy days in the year on average 35 (measurement period 1995-2006). In the municipality is the northern part of the 36,000 hectare nature reserve Forêt classée de Baban Rafi .

history

The French colonial administration established a canton in Safo in 1944 . In 2002, as part of a nationwide administrative reform, the canton Safo became the rural municipality of Safo. The neighboring municipality of Djiratawa raised territorial claims to the village of Riadi from 2008.

population

At the 2001 census, Safo had 53,631 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 76,454. Safo is a traditional center of the Azna .

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops .
