Guliko Sagaradze

Guram ("Guliko") Sagaradze ( Georgian გურამ (გულიკო) საღარაძე ; born March 21, 1939 in Tbilisi ) is a former Soviet wrestler from the Georgian SSR , two-time world champion and winner of the silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo in free style Welterweight.

Career

Guliko Sagaradze comes from Georgia . There he started wrestling as a teenager and after his first regional successes was delegated to the wrestling center in Tbilisi . Here he matured into an excellent freestyle wrestler.

In 1961 he first drew attention to himself when he defeated the multiple world champion Imam-Ali Habibi on points in a match between Georgia and Iran . In 1963 he was first used by the Soviet Wrestling Association at an international championship. At the World Championships in Sofia , he completed while a convincing debut and was charged with four wins and a draw against İsmail Ogan from Turkey champion .

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , he remained unbeaten in six fights, but only won the silver medal because he only fought a draw against Ismail Ogan and Mohammad-Ali Sanatkaran , while Ogan won against Sanatkaran and thus became Olympic champion .

At the 1965 World Cup in Manchester , Guliko was the best again. Ogan was no longer there and Guliko four wins and one draw against Sanatkaran were enough to win the title. At the 1966 World Cup in Toledo / USA , Guliko was runner-up, because he lost in the final against Mahmut Atalay from Turkey and also at the 1967 World Cup in New Delhi , he finished second. Although he won against defending champion Mahmut Atalay, he suffered a defeat against the surprising Frenchman Daniel Robin .

At the European Championships in 1968 in Skopje Guliko came only in 3rd place, where he lost after five wins against Károly Bajkó from Hungary . This 3rd place was not enough for the Soviet sports officials and cost Guliko to participate in the Olympics in Mexico City . The Soviet Union put Yuri Shachmuradov there, but he only came in 6th place.

After finishing his career as an active wrestler, Guliko Sagaradze was a coach in Tbilisi. One of his best students was multiple world heavyweight world champion Dawit Gobedschishvili .
