Saido Berahino (born August 4, 1993 in Bujumbura , Burundi ) is an English - Burundian football player . The striker is under contract with SV Zulte Waregem and plays for the Burundian national team .

Personal

Berahino, whose father died early, came to England at the age of ten to live with his mother Liliane and his siblings as a civil war refugee from Burundi . His family was granted political asylum in Newtown, a suburb of Birmingham . He is a Christian and reads the Bible regularly . Berahino is the father of three children.

Career

society

Starts at West Bromwich

After a successful trial training in the U-12 team, Berahino got a scholarship to the youth academy of West Bromwich Albion despite some language barriers - he only spoke French . After developing well, the youngster signed his first professional contract with a term of one year in 2011 at the age of 17.

Lend

In October 2011 Berahino was loaned to fourth division Northampton Town for a month , for which he made his debut shortly thereafter. After his loan contract was renewed twice, he left Northampton again in February 2012. In his 15 appearances, the 18-year-old had mostly played the full game distance and scored six goals. Until the end of the season he was awarded to the third division club Brentford . Because of a dispute with trainer Uwe Rösler , the loan deal was ended after only two months. The striker had scored four goals in his eight games for Brentford FC.

After a brief assignment for West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup , the attacker was awarded again in October 2012, this time to the second division side Peterborough United . Berahino was also used there regularly. Berahino scored two goals in his ten appearances.

Breakthrough in the Premier League

After Berahino scored a hat trick in the League Cup against AFC Newport County , the striker made his Premier League debut the following weekend . In the 0-2 home defeat against Swansea City , he came on for Scott Sinclair a quarter of an hour before the end of the game . Four weeks later, the junior international scored the 2-1 winning goal in his starting eleven in the encounter against Manchester United at Old Trafford . It was the striker's first goal in his fourth Premier League encounter. In December 2013, his contract term was prematurely extended to 2017. During the rest of the season Berahino scored five goals in 32 games, mostly as a substitute.

He joined Stoke City in January 2017 and was relegated with the team from the Premier League at the end of the 2017/18 season .

After Berahino was noticed in February 2019 for drinking and driving, he was no longer included in the squad for a game at Stoke City. After the summer break, during which he took part in the Africa Cup with the national team , he did not return to Stoke City to prepare for the season, but trained with the Belgian first division SV Zulte Waregem . On August 7, 2019, he reached an agreement with Stoke City to terminate his contract in exchange for a severance payment.

Only then did he sign a new two-year contract with Waregem on August 9, 2019, with the option of extending it for another year. The change took place accordingly free of charge.

National team

Berahino went through all of England's youth national teams from the U-16 selection . On October 14th, he qualified with the U-21 team for the U-21 European Championship 2015 in the Czech Republic . Berahino was together with Poland's Arkadiusz Milik the most successful scorer in the qualifying round .

On November 6, 2014 Berahino was appointed by Roy Hodgson to the squad of the English national team for the games against Slovenia and Scotland, although he only had the role of reservist.

After no further appointments to English national teams in the following years, he played for the Burundian national team for the first time on September 8, 2018 . In his debut, a 1-1 draw against Gabon in the qualifier for the 2019 African Cup of Nations , he scored the goal to take the lead 1-0.

He then took part in all qualifying matches of the national team that qualified for the Africa Cup. There he played in all preliminary round matches. However, the Burundian national team only reached zero points and was therefore eliminated from the tournament.

Style of play

Berahino is known as an agile and tricky player who can be used on the outside as well as in the center. Due to his technical versatility, he often has scoring chances that he still rarely exploits. Against more robust opponents he is usually physically inferior, but this deficit, like the striker, is due to his speed. His fitness values have improved significantly in recent years. In addition, Berahino is considered a sure penalty taker .
