history
Relics such as a menhir are evidence of settlement since the Neolithic Age. In Le Vieux-Parc there are remains of a curtain wall and a moat. And in La Couaille, archaeologists excavated the remains of a moth with a curtain wall. Both castles were built in the Middle Ages. In a bull from the then Pope to the Abbey of Saint-Jacut-de-l'Isle, the community was first mentioned by name in 1163 as Sancti Jacuti de Selmene . At the expense of the neighboring community of Le Gouray , the community grew in 1823 and 1849. The settlements of Bransac (Bransart), La Gouillère (La Goulière), La Chênaie, La Tiolais (La Thiollaye), La Ruais, La Haye and La Roche changed to Saint-Jacut -du-Mené. The municipality belonged to the Broons district from 1793 to 1801 and was part of the canton of Langourla. From 1801 to 1926 it was part of the Loudéac arrondissement and has since been part of the Dinan arrondissement. From 1801 to 2015 it was a municipality in the canton of Collinée .
With effect from January 1, 2016, the merger of all seven municipalities of the communauté de communes du Mené resulted in the new municipality Le Mené , to which Saint-Jacut-du-Mené belongs. The municipality of Saint-Jacut-du-Mené belonged to the Arrondissement of Dinan and the canton of Plénée-Jugon .
Population development
The number of residents rose only slightly between 1793 and 1831 (1793–1831: +5.3%) - with a single outlier in 1806 (708 people). This was followed by a growth phase until 1846 (1831–1846: + 22.5%). The expansion of the area in 1849 brought a one-time population surge with an increase of 260 people (or 33.6%) in the five years after 1846. After that, the increase flattened. Between 1872 and 1876 there was a further sharp increase in population of 184 people (+ 16.5%). From 1876 until shortly after the turn of the century, the number of residents remained almost the same (1876–1901: + 4.9%). After the peak in 1901, the population fell slightly until the beginning of the First World War. As a result of the numerous casualties and the flu wave of 1918, the number of residents fell by 104 people between 1911 and 1921 (−8.2%). Between the two world wars, the population decreased again (1921–1936: −13.6%). But with the beginning of the Second World War, an even stronger rural exodus began until 1990 (1936–1990: −27.0%). Since 1990 the population has increased again slightly (1990–2013: + 10.2%) - but it is well below the population high of 1901.
