The Roman Catholic church Saint-Joseph ( lux . : Kierch vun Déifferdeng-Fuussbann , short: Kierch Fuussbann ) in Differdingen , district Fousbann, belongs to the parish Déifferdeng Saint-François-d'Assise and thus to the deanery Esch-sur-Alzette and to the Archbishopric of Luxembourg (lux .: Äerzbistum Lëtzebuerg ), which includes the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

The patron saint of the church is St. Joseph of Nazareth ( lux . : Hellege Jousef), whose feast is celebrated on March 19th.

history

Due to the strong population growth at the beginning of the 20th century, the previous Differdingen church became too small and an expansion of the church was considered.

In 1919 Pastor Olinger came to Differdingen and in August 1919 bought a building site for a new church in the Fuussbann (Fousbann). Due to the economic hardship in Luxembourg after the First World War , it was initially not possible to implement the project. On November 8, 1932, a building association was founded for the construction of a new church and the expansion of the previous Parish church in Differdingen (demolished in 2013).

The plans for the new church in modern style were drawn up by the architect Jean Deitz from Esch-sur-Alzette and approved by the city council, the government and the diocese. The plan envisaged that the church should be built in three stages, the nave in the first stage, a transept and the choir in the second stage and the church tower with the sacristy in the third stage.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Easter Sunday 1933 and the building of the nave was completed at the end of 1933. After completion of the interior work, the church was opened by Dean Nic on Sunday, July 22nd, 1934. Bisdorff was inaugurated in the presence of Bishop Pierre Nommesch . The first mass with Pastor Olinger was on July 29, 1934.

It was not until 26 years later, on December 8, 1960, that the foundation stone for the construction of the church tower was laid. In July 1961 the shell was finished and in August 1962 the work on the new tower and the restoration work in the interior of the church were completed.

location

The Fousbann district developed gradually in the 20th century and includes the Cité Henry Gray and Cité Kauffmann settlements . The Differdinger Hütte was built in 1898, turning the previous village into a small town. The rue de la Chapelle runs southwest of the church itself and rue Emile Mark (CR 174) to the northeast . The church is right at the intersection of these two streets, just a few meters from the Differdange steelworks in Arcelor Mittal to the north .

building

The building of the church (nave about 25 × 14 meters) is based on the neo-Romanesque style and can accommodate about 1000 people. The nave has, among other things, 14 high arched windows with glass paintings for natural light. These high arched windows are also architecturally defining for the overall appearance of the building.

The main entrance portal to the northwest is flanked by two rectangular gate towers (baptistery and Theresien chapel). There are three narrow, about six feet high above the portal arched windows and above an approximately 3.5 m high Christ the King - relief .

Stained glass window

14 stained glass windows with figurative representations of saints were made by the Binsfeld and Co. in 1934. Six glass windows with free composition (without figurative representations) come from Gustave Zanter (around 1965).

organ

The organ was manufactured in 1964 by the Manufacture d'orgues luxembourgeoise from Lintgen . It has been preserved unchanged to this day, but is no longer playable. Today an electronic digital organ from Allen, AP series, which is installed downstairs in the church, is used.
