Saint-Maurice-de-Tavernole is a small village and a former French commune with the last 142 inhabitants (2015) in the department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Poitou-Charentes ). It belonged to the arrondissement of Jonzac and the canton of the same name .

The formerly independent municipality merged with Réaux and Moings in the newly created Commune nouvelle Réaux sur Trèfle with effect from January 1, 2016 . The administrative headquarters are in Réaux. The former municipalities were not granted the status of a Commune déléguée .

Population development

The place, which is still dominated by agriculture (viticulture, corn, wheat, sunflowers), experienced a steady and drastic population decline from the second half of the 19th century, which did not end until the middle of the 20th century.

Saint-Maurice Church

The simple village church dates from the 17th century; a roof beam bears the inscription: Ce temple a este, fait en l'an 1604 (or 1609). According to tradition, a previous church was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War or the Huguenot Wars and then replaced by the current chapel.

During restoration work in 2001, when the interior walls were re- plastered , several sarcophagi were found at the base of the buttresses .

In 2002 all interior walls were provided with a frieze of modern frescoes depicting the 14 Stations of the Cross and, in the apse behind the altar , the resurrection of Jesus .
