The Saint Francis River (river name in the USA) is a 110 km long left tributary of the Saint John River in the Canadian province of Québec , which also runs along the border with the province of New Brunswick and along the border with the US state Maine .
River names
The river has three different names: In the United States , it is officially called the Saint Francis River . In Canada it has a French name, Rivière Saint-François , and an (shortened) English name, St. Francis River .
River course
The Saint Francis River has its origin in the Lac Saint-François in the Monts Notre-Dame , a mountain range of the Appalachians , 20 km east-southeast of the city of Rivière-du-Loup in the province of Québec. The river flows south from the southern end of the lake to Lac Pohénégamook . It shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river bends and oxbow lakes. At river kilometer 65 the river leaves the southern end of the lake of Lac Pohénégamook. Immediately below the lake is the US border. The river turns east and now forms the border between the Canadian province of Québec and the US state of Maine. In Québec, the course of the river is within the MRC Témiscouata . There the communities Pohénégamook and Rivière-Bleue are on the river. At Rivière-Bleue the Rivière Bleue flows into the river on the left. This now turns south and flows through the lake Le Beau Lac . Below the lake, the Saint Francis River forms the border between New Brunswick to the east and Maine to the west. The river flows a little further south before turning south-east. It flows through the lakes Cross Lake , Grew Pond , McPherson Pond and Glasier Lake , which all represent river widenings of the Saint Francis River. Finally, the Saint Francis River flows into the Saint John River opposite the US community of St. Francis .
