Harjit Singh Sajjan (born September 6, 1970 in the district of Hoshiarpur , Punjab , India ) is a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada . He has been Secretary of Defense in the 29th Canadian Cabinet under Justin Trudeau since November 2015 . In the Canadian Parliament he has represented the constituency of Vancouver South since the Canadian general election in 2015 . With his election as MP, he replaced the conservative Wai Young .

Prior to his political career, Sajjan was a detective for the Vancouver Police Department and regimental commander in the Canadian Armed Forces , where he was recognized for his service in Afghanistan . Sajjan is the first Sikh to command a Canadian army regiment.

Life

Harjit Singh Sajjan was born in a village in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, India . His family immigrated to Canada when Sajjan was five. He spent his youth in Vancouver , British Columbia .

Sajjan worked in the Vancouver Police Department for eleven years. At the end of his career there, he was a detective in a department for combating gang crime .

In 1989, Sajjan joined the Canadian Army and most recently served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces . He served there in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in Kandahar . He has been on missions abroad four times, once in Bosnia and Herzegovina and three times in Afghanistan. In 2011 he became the first Sikh to command a regiment in the Canadian Army. Among other things, he was commander of UNPROFOR during his deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina ( Sarajevo ) and also commander of the Canadian military police ( CFMP ) involved. In 2012 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his contribution to reducing the Taliban's influence in Kandahar. For this reason, he was awarded the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal. As an aide-de-camp , he served the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia . His skills were also in demand in the US military in Afghanistan. In 2010 he served as a special assistant to Maj. Gen. James L. Terry .

Sajjan was elected representative of the Vancouver South constituency in the 2015 general election. Sajjan was appointed Minister of Defense in Justin Trudeau's cabinet on November 4th.

Sajjan is married to the doctor Kuljit Kaur Sajjan, the couple have a daughter and a son.
