Salomon Abas

Salomon "Sal" Abas , pseudonym James Wilton (born April 28, 1900 in Amsterdam , North Holland , Netherlands ; † July 2, 1943 in the Sobibor extermination camp ) was a Dutch violinist, conductor and composer.

Life

Family and childhood in Amsterdam

Salomon Aba's parents were the Jewish diamond cutter Jacob Abas (1869–1942) and his wife Klara Abas (1871–1929), who was born in Amsterdam and died in Auschwitz . His brother was the violinist and conductor Nathan Abas . Both had three other siblings. Salomon Abas played various musical instruments such as the piano, violin and oboe. He used a longer stay abroad to study conducting.

1921 to 1939

In 1921 he stayed in Semarang in the Dutch East Indies . He was Kapellmeister of the orchestra of the Smabers -Restaurant and wrote his first compositions there. On December 10, 1921 he gave his official farewell concert with the Smabers Ensemble. With the SS Koningin der Nederlanden he left on December 15, 1921 from Batavia from the Dutch East Indies in the direction of Genoa . In 1924 he was back in Amsterdam. He made music for silent films in cinemas. In October 1924 he accompanied musicians other than James Wilton en de zijnen in the Kino Centraal, Nieuwendijk 67 in Amsterdam, the film Peter the Great with Emil Jannings . On October 25, 1924, the S ociëteit Veenlust , Veendam performed the operetta in four acts with a prelude to Het circuskind with music by NJ Cresé and James Wilton . On November 12, 1924, he married Henderika Henny Goudsmit (1898-1946). The wedding ceremony took place in the Zandvoort synagogue . From January 1925 he played in the cinema Scala in the Kruiskade in Rotterdam. In July 1925, the film Hannele's Hemelvaart [ Hanneles Himmelfahrt ] was shown at Scala . Abas directed the music for the film, using a large children's choir with solo singers. On March 16, 1927, Abas was divorced from Henderika Goudsmit. On June 30, 1927, he married Friederike Maria Lubomiersky in Hamburg, who was born on June 14, 1901 in Gelsenkirchen. On November 18, 1931, the day of penance and prayer of the year, a concert for the benefit of Winterhilfe took place in the hall of the Hotel Esplanade in Hamburg . The orchestra of the Reich Association of German Musicians played. Conductor was conductor James Wilton. In addition to the Egmont overture by Ludwig van Beethoven , the Unfinished by Franz Schubert was performed. He was divorced from his second wife Friederike on December 29, 1931 in Hamburg. The Berlin-born pianist Franziska Schotter (* 1908) also took part in the organ, whom he married on May 18 of that year in Hamburg. In July 1933 he led the orchestra in the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam for the performances of the revue Hier Parkeeren , for which he had arranged the music. In the autumn of 1933 he was Kapellmeister of the orchestra of the Astoria Theater in Dordrecht . In 1936 he went on tour through the Netherlands with his dance orchestra. From January 1936 he made dance music in the Cafe Limburgia in Heerlen with his formation Musical Ladies. In October 1936 he played with the Musical Ladies in the Centraal-National café-restaurant in Arnhem . On November 1st he played with his dance orchestra in the Du Commerce café-restaurant in Haarlem . At Easter 1938 he played with his orchestra in the Feestgebouw Gulden Vlies in Alkmaar . In December 1939 he played with the Orchester James Wilton at the Hotel Schiller on Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam.

Time after 1939

Salomon Abas was the conductor of the Nieuw Amsterdams Kamerorkest [New Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra] . He conducted the orchestra at the Second Summer Concert of the Vriendenkring Craftsmen on July 16, 1941 with the soloists Frieda van Hessen (* 1915) and Justus Bonn (1917–1978) and at the third summer concert on August 24, 1941 with the soloists Judith Toff (1907– 1943) and Hermann Schey (1895–1981). The first subscription concert on October 19, 1941 in the Great Hall of the Handwerks Vriendenkring with the soprano Lotte Medak (1917–1978) also took place under his direction. After that, the orchestra was renamed Nieuw Joods Kamerorkest [New Jewish Chamber Orchestra] NJKO. The orchestra already bore this name in the third subscription concert on November 24, 1941. At the seventh subscription concert in the Joodse Schouwburg on January 19, his wife Franziska Schotter played the solo piano part of Rhapsody in Blue . He was divorced from her on February 24, 1942 in 's Gravenhage . On June 16, 1943, he was taken to Sobibor on the 16th transport. He was killed on arrival in Sobibor on July 2, 1943.

Works (selection)

Salomon Abas created various works in the field of light music, but he also created works for a concert audience, which were performed by the NJKO. As a composer, he published his works under the pseudonym James Wilton.

  • Voetbalmarsch [football march]. The work was performed as part of a city championship in May 1921 in Semarang. The march was dedicated to the Indian Voetbal NINB.
  • Wapenmarsch , Marche militaire. The work was performed on September 14, 15 and 16, 1921 in Semarang and was composed in honor of the Governor General there.

  • Het Circuskind [Das Zirkuskind], operetta in four acts with prelude. The S ociëteit Veenlust , Veendam performed this operetta on October 29, 1924 in Veendam. The Nederlandsche Tooneel-en Operetta Spelers performed under the direction of Jos. Mastenbroeck.
  • Olympiad , Marche triumphant.
  • Ruhr girl , marching song. The song was broadcast on November 18, 1929 on Radio Wien in the afternoon concert program between 4:00 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. in a performance by the Silving Quartet .
  • Tamboer-majoor marsch for piano, published in Amsterdam near Alsbach OCLC 71486884 (Dutch)
  • Parkeeren here [park here], Big Revue. The premiere took place on July 15, 1933 in the Hollandsche Schouwburg under the direction of the actor Alex de Meester (1891–1957) and the dancer Luigi di Fraën, whose Di Fraën ballet took part. Abas arranged the music and played with his orchestra during the performance.
  • Blijft Nederlander !, 1933. Abas dedicated this patriotic song to the Queen of the Netherlands, who accepted the dedication.
