Salon Verlag & Edition

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salon Verlag & Edition is an art book publisher specializing in international contemporary art . It was founded in 1995 by Gerhard Theewen in Cologne.

history

During his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , Gerhard Theewen's interest in the collection, archiving and publication of art began. In 1976, an art magazine with the title “Salon” was created with twelve issues and appeared every six months. After a break of several years, he decided to continue this work in the form of a publishing house in order to present artists more extensively and "to stimulate a discussion about art in our time". The artists should be given the greatest possible freedom.

The name “Salon” is a reference both to the tradition of French exhibitions of modern art , the “Salons d'Art moderne”, and to everyday culture , such as the laundromat or the hairdressing salon.

Editions

In addition to original limited editions, one focus of the publishing program is the “Ex Libris” series. An artist selects a book that is important for his work and his understanding of art, which is provided with a newly designed cover and an ex-libris in the reprint . Between 1996 and 2006, 49 artist books were published in the “édition séparée” series, which Theewen edited together with the Cologne art collector Reiner Speck . The series "édition questions", edited by the author Ignaz Knips, is dedicated to philosophical questions with contributions from art theorists such as Bernhard Waldenfels , Maurice Merleau-Ponty , Bazon Brock , Michael Glasmeier , Marcus Steinweg , Michael Glasmeier, Noam Chomsky , Andreas Speer , Jean -Luc Nancy .

To date (as of 2019), according to the company, over 500 monographs, artist books, exhibition catalogs, catalogs of works as well as thematic and theory volumes have been published by Salon Verlag.
