Samuel Edney (born June 24, 1984 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian luge rider .

Life

Samuel Edney has been a luge driver since 1998. Since 2000 he has been a member of the national team of Canada. In the 2002/03 season he won the overall ranking of the Junior World Cup in singles and came fourth in the doubles competition. Since the 2003/04 season he has been taking part in both single and double seats with his toboggan partner Gwyn Lewis . First of all, the two-seater achieved greater success. They made their debut in Calgary and finished seventh immediately and tenth in Winterberg. In the overall standings they were 15. In the single-seater he was 31st in the overall standings, the best result was 21st place in Lake Placid . In particular, the double results were roughly maintained in the following season . In 2005/06 they only contested the first two races, since then Edney has only started in a single-seater.

Since concentrating on the single-seater, Edney has become more and more successful in this class. In the 2005/06 season he came in Altenberg and Calgary on 14th place and was 27th overall. The 2006/07 season brought no new improvement in the ranks in individual races, but the Canadian was now able to improve to 22nd place overall. Since he did not contest the last two races in 2007/08 , he lost one place in the overall standings, but achieved a new best individual result in 12th place on his home track. He was able to confirm this result in the following season in Vancouver and was 21st overall.

Edney's first major event was at the 2004 Luge World Championships in Nagano . With his partner Lewis he was 13th in the doubles competition and 25th in the singles. Also in 2005 he achieved his better position in the two-seater with rank 17. In the 2006 Olympic Games of Turin of Canadians in standalone 19th Disappointing reached ended in 32nd place, the Luge World Championships in 2007 in Nagano. The 2008 Luge World Championships in Oberhof went far better , where Edney achieved his best international result with ninth place. He was only partially able to confirm the result in Lake Placid in 2009 as 17th. After the international season he won the Canadian championship.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Samuel Edney reached 7th place.

At the Luge World Championships in Altenberg in 2012 , he won the bronze medal with the team relay, and the following year he won the silver medal at the World Championships in Whistler.

At the Luge World Cup 2014/2015 he celebrated his first victory in the individual world cup on his home track in Calgary.
