Samuel Jon "Sam" Hornish Jr. (born July 2, 1979 in Defiance , Ohio ) is a retired American automobile racer who was active for Penske Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and later drove part-time in the Xfinity Series . He previously drove for Penske in the Indy Racing League , in which he won the championship in 2001, 2002 and 2006. In 2006 he also won the Indianapolis 500 .

Career

Early years

Hornish Jr. began racing karting at the age of eleven . After driving in junior series for several years, he joined the World Karting Association in 1993 , where he won seven races and achieved 29 top 5 results. The following season he won several World Karting Association championships, including the US and Canadian Grand Championship, and the US Junior Class Grand Championship. In 1995 Hornish was again champion in the US Grand Championship and won nine races. He then moved to the US F2000 National Championship , where he drove six races for the family-owned team and scored a top 10 result at Watkins Glen . In 1997 Hornish moved to Bordin Racing and finished eleventh twice before moving to Primus Racing . He finished second on the Pikes Peak International Raceway and finished seventh in the championship.

In 1999 Hornish went to Shank Racing , for which he competed in the Toyota Atlantic Series . He won the title of Rookie of the Year for the series' best newcomer and was victorious at Chicago Motor Speedway . He also drove the Daytona 24 Hours for Intersport Racing .

Indy Racing League

He played his first year in the Indy Racing League (IRL) in 2000 for the PDM team and reached third place overall. The following year he drove for Panthers and became an IRL champion. In 2002 Penske joined the IRL, but Hornish was able to beat their best driver Hélio Castroneves and become champion for the second time.

In 2003, he finished fifth overall with Team Panther's car powered by a Cosworth Chevrolet engine. In 2004 he moved to Penske. He was able to win the first race of the season, but in the course of the season the Honda engines proved to be superior to the Toyota engine used by Penske . In 2005 he was third overall behind two Andretti Green Racing drivers .

On May 28, 2006, after he had already stood on pole position , he also won the Indianapolis 500 race with a lead of just 0.0635 seconds over Marco Andretti . At the end of the season he was also tied champion in front of last year's champion Dan Wheldon due to the fact that he had won two races more than Wheldon in the 2006 season.

On October 28, 2006, Hornish announced that he would attempt the last two races of the 2006 NASCAR Busch Series season for Penske Racing , as well as individual races in the 2007 season . In his first two starts in 2006 he drove a Mobil 1 sponsored Dodge with the starting number 39, but was involved in accidents in both races with a 36th place as the best result. In 2007 he competed in seven races of the Busch Series with the number 12. His best finish was a 15th place on the Atlanta Motor Speedway . In autumn 2007, after the end of the IRL season Hornish went to the # 06 for Penske in the Nextel Cup at the start and has run two races, the Checker Auto Parts 500 at the Phoenix International Raceway and the Ford 400 to the Homestead-Miami Speedway , with a 30th place as the best result.

In the 2008 season he drove the Dodge with the starting number 77 and Mobil 1 as a sponsor for Penske. In his first Daytona 500 , Hornish finished in 15th place, while his teammates Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch took first and second place. Also in the 2009 season he was active for Penske in the Sprint Cup.

Personal

Sam Hornish has been married since 2004. Since 2001 Sam Hornish Jr. has been a member of the Freemasonry Association , his lodge Omega Lodge # 564 Defiance is based in Ohio.
