Samuel "Sam" Labrecque-Garneau (born February 20, 1992 in Granby , Québec ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who is used in the position of defender and has been under contract with the French Gap Hockey Club from the Ligue Magnus since 2018 .

Career

From 2007 to 2010, Labrecque played for high school teams in Québec and then played one season in the junior league British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). In the BCHL, the offensive defender scored 15 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances in the main round, as well as three goals and an assist in five appearances in the play-offs. The end of the season was his election for Rookie of the Year for the Nanaimo Clippers and for the BCHL All-Rookie Team.

From 2011 to 2014 he spent three seasons with the Clarkson Golden Knights of Clarkson University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and established himself as a high-point defender. In his first season he scored 23 points (8 goals and 15 assists), which was not only the most points of the rookies of his team, but also the highest score of a Clarkson defender since Randy Jones 2002/03. The season ended with his renewed election as Rookie of the Year.

From 2014 he played for McGill University in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and scored the most goals (13) of all defenders in the league in his first season. He was also elected to the All-Star Team in the OUA- East department . In the main round of the following season he was top scorer of all CIS defenders (44 points in 28 games) and third best scorer of all players, scored the most powerplay goals in the league and accounted for around 40% of McGill's goals. He was elected to the CIS All-Star Team, the CIS All-Canadian, the OUA East All-Star and the OUA Defender of the Year. For 2016, he was named McGill University's Athlete of the Year.

For the 2016/17 season, Labrecque moved to Europe and was signed by the EC VSV from the EBEL . He scored his first goal for Villach in the second test match with the 4-3 winning goal in overtime against Alba Volán Székesfehérvár . He finished the season with 26 points.

In September 2017, the ECHL team Wichita Thunder announced the signing of Sam Labrecque. At the end of October 2017, however, Labrecque left the Thunder and returned to the EC VSV.

For the 2018/19 season he received a contract with the French first division club Gap Hockey Club .
