Samuel Lawrence Whitelock (born October 12, 1988 in Palmerston North , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player on the position of the second-line striker . His three brothers Adam Whitelock , George Whitelock and Luke Whitelock are also New Zealand rugby union players. In addition, his father Braeden Whitelock is a former rugby player for the Junior All Blacks and his grandfather Nelson Dalzell was a New Zealand national rugby player.
Like his brothers, he went to high school in Feilding , where he played rugby on their national team from 2005 to 2007. Furthermore, he played from 2006 to 2007 in the U-18 of Manawatu RU , in the school selection of the Hurricanes and in the national New Zealand school selection. He also played for New Zealand in 2007 and 2008 in the Junior Rugby World Cup , which his country won. In his school days, however, he was also a good basketball player in addition to rugby .
In 2008 Whitelock moved to Lincoln to study at Lincoln University . There he joined the university's rugby club. In his first year at university, Sam Whitelock was named Sportsman of the Year in 2008. Because of his achievements, he was appointed to the squad of Canterbury RFU for the New Zealand rugby championship that same year . Together with his brothers Adam and George he was champion with Canterbury in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, although he was hardly or not at all in the last two championships due to national team commitments. His brother Luke has also played for Canterbury since 2011.
In 2010 Whitelock made his debut with the Crusaders in super rugby . George and Adam also play for the Crusaders. After his first super rugby season, Sam Whitelock was nominated for the first time for the New Zealand national team (All Blacks). With her he won the Tri Nations 2010 , defended the Bledisloe Cup against the Australian national team (Wallabies) and won the Grand Slam on the November tour in Europe . In 2011 he defended the Bledisloe Cup again with the All Blacks and won the 2011 Rugby Union World Cup in his own country. In 2015 Sam Whitelock was able to defend the world championship with the All Blacks in England and Wales .
