Career

Sami Sandell began his career as a hockey player in the youth of the Finnish first division club Ilves Tampere , in which he was active until 2004. He then played for two seasons for the Brandon Wheat Kings from the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League before returning to Tampere. He made his debut for Ilves in the 2006/07 season in the SM-liiga , the top Finnish division. After two and a half years, Sandell left the team during the 2008/09 season to play for their league rivals Espoo Blues . He started the 2009/10 season at LeKi in the Mestis , the second Finnish division. He also completed a game for his ex-club Iles Tampere in the SM-liiga. In December 2009 he joined IF Troja-Ljungby from the second Swedish division, HockeyAllsvenskan , in which he was on the ice for the following year and a half.

For the 2011/12 season he was signed by Luleå HF from the Elitserien and played for this club until 2013 before returning to his home club. In the following five years Sandell played for his home club Ilves Tampere, with whom he missed the playoffs in the 2017/18 season as the best scorer of his club (48 points in 53 games). He then took part in a World Cup with Finland for the first time in May. In July 2018 he initially received a trial contract with HC Davos , which was extended a month later. A few days later, he twisted his knee and was out for the rest of the season with cartilage damage in his knee.

International

For Finland Sandell took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 2007 , where he finished sixth with his team.
