Samuel Amsler (born December 17, 1791 in Schinznach , † May 18, 1849 in Munich ) was a Swiss engraver .

Life

The son of the medical officer and farmer Jakob Amsler had lessons from Johann Heinrich Lips from 1810 , after which he studied in Munich . In 1816 Amsler went to Rome and in 1829 he became a professor at the Art Academy in Munich . He is considered one of the main masters of the Nazarene reproduction engraving . His students included Wilhelm von Kaulbach , Heinrich Merz and Carl Arnold Gonzenbach . Amsler's nephew Jakob Amsler-Laffon was a well-known mathematician and engineer.
