Samuel Frost Johnson

Samuel Frost Johnson (born November 9, 1835 in New York City , † 1879 ) was an American genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Johnson came to Düsseldorf from New York City in 1858 . In the same year he enrolled there at the Royal Prussian Art Academy to study painting. His teachers were Josef Wintergerst , Rudolf Wiegmann , Andreas and Karl Müller and Heinrich Mücke until 1859/1860 . He stayed in Düsseldorf until around 1861/1862. Then he went to Antwerp . From 1865 to 1869 he lived in Écouen near Paris . There he was a student of the genre painter Edouard Frère . In 1869 he took part in the Salon de Paris . Johnson returned to the United States in the 1870s and became a teacher at Saint John's College and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. One of his students was Juliette Gordon Low . At the same time he took part in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design .
