Samuel von Waldeck (born May 2, 1528 at Waldeck Castle ; † January 6, 1570 at Friedrichstein Castle in Altwildungen ) was the second son of Count Philip IV of Waldeck -Wildungen (1493–1574) and his first wife, Margarethe von Ostfriesland (1500-15 July 1537). He comes from the Waldeck family .

Life

Samuel studied in Marburg from 1544 to 1545 . In 1546/47 he took part in the Schmalkaldic War on the Protestant side and was seriously wounded and captured on April 24, 1547 in the decisive battle near Mühlberg .

After his marriage on October 8, 1554 in Waldeck with Anna-Maria von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg (* December 7, 1538, † August 11, 1583) his father left him the office of Wildungen and he took his seat at Friedrichstein Castle in Alt-Wildungen . From there he ruled his Paragium until his death. Since he died before his father, his younger brother Daniel followed his father as Count von Waldeck-Wildungen.

On April 4, 1567, he and his brother Daniel were among the pallbearers at the funeral of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse .

Mountain freedom and Snow White

In 1559 Samuel received all mines and salt wells in his sub-county from Emperor Ferdinand I as a fief . On September 14, 1561, he issued an edict on mountain freedom in the Urff valley , where copper ore had been mined since 1552 and where a copper ore mine was set up in Berg Freiheit, which was operated until 1590 and of which he was the main shareholder until 1570. Today the village advertises as "Snow White Village in the Kellerwald ". The Hessian local historian Eckhard Sander traces the Grimm fairy tale of Snow White back to the miners' village Berg Freiheit and Princess Margaretha , a sister of Count Samuel who is known for her extraordinary beauty. The reference to the seven dwarfs in this context is traced back to child labor in the mine .

family

Samuel's wife Anna Maria, daughter of Count Heinrich XLIII. von Schwarzburg-Arnstadt-Sondershausen, died in Höhnscheid Castle . She had been imprisoned there since November 26, 1576 because of her immoral lifestyle, after she had even married a Magister Göbert Raben, called Kalbskopf, the son of a citizen of Marburg from Korbach .

The following children were born out of the marriage:

  • Philipp Heinrich (* 1555, † 1556)
  • Günther , Count von Waldeck-Wildungen (born June 29, 1557, † May 23, 1585)
  • Heinrich († 1559)
  • Johann Günther (died as a toddler)
  • Samuel (deceased as a toddler)
  • Daniel (died as a toddler)
  • Margaretha (* 1564, † 1575, fell from a cliff at Ober-Werbe )

Death and succession

Samuel died on January 6, 1570, before his father, and was buried on January 10 in the parish church in Niederwildungen. His Renaissance tomb, made by the stonemason Georg von der Tann, is located in the north aisle above the entrance to the sexton.

He was followed by his brother Daniel († June 7, 1577), who also inherited the county of Waldeck-Wildungen after the death of their father Philip IV.
