San José del Cabitu (also: San José del Kavitu or San José del Cavitu ) is a town in the Beni department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

San José del Cabitu is the third largest town in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of Santa Ana del Yacuma in the province of Yacuma . The village is located at an altitude of 178  m on the northern edge of the TIPNIS protected area on the eastern bank of the Río Apere , a left tributary of the Río Mamoré .

San José del Cabitu is located in the Moxos plain , with over 100,000 km² one of the largest wetlands on earth. The predominant form of vegetation in the San Ignacio region is the tropical savannah .

The annual average temperature for the region is 26 ° C (see Trinidad climate diagram), with the monthly average temperatures between June / July at a good 23 ° C and October / December at just under 28 ° C only slightly different. The annual precipitation is almost 2000 mm and is therefore more than twice as high as the precipitation in Central Europe. San José del Cavitu is located at a distance of 149 kilometers by road southwest of Trinidad , the capital of the department.

From Trinidad the highway Ruta 3 leads in a south-westerly direction to San Ignacio de Moxos and further via Yucumo and Sapecho to the metropolis of La Paz in the Andean highlands. Seven kilometers southwest of San Ignacio, the planned route 24 branches off to the south-west from route 3, from here it is another fifty kilometers to San José del Cabitu on the Río Apere .
