Location in the vicinity

The place is located at an altitude of 3833  m one kilometer south of the Río Azanaques , which flows ten kilometers further west into the southern part of Lake Poopó .

geography

San Pedro de Condo is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The region's climate is arid and characterized by a typical time of day climate.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C (see Challapata climate diagram) and fluctuates only insignificantly between 5 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is around 300 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and only a few months with sufficient moisture, the wettest month is January with just over 70 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

San Pedro de Condo is 144 kilometers by road south of Oruro , the capital of the department.

The Ruta 1 road leads south from Oruro and reaches the town of Poopó after 53 kilometers and the town of Challapata after another 63 kilometers . From here the route 30 reaches Santiago de Huari in a southerly direction after 23 kilometers and continues via Sevaruyo and Río Mulato to Uyuni . In Santiago de Huari a dirt road branches off to the southeast and after four kilometers crosses the Rìo Azanaques, on whose southern bank is San Pedro de Condo .

population

The population of the village has increased almost fourfold in the past two decades:

year Residents source
1992 271 census
2001 ... census
2012 1 048 census

Due to the population distribution that has evolved over time, the region has a significant proportion of the Aymara population; in the municipality of Santiago de Huari, 45.1 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .

economy

The population lives mainly from the cultivation of the staple foods quinoa , potatoes and beans , which is only practiced extensively due to the sandy and nutrient-poor soil and is almost exclusively used for self-sufficiency. In addition to basic food, the women from Condo cultivate medicinal plants that they sell in the Oruro department's markets. Fishing in the nearby Poopó Lake is no longer possible, as the water in the lake is highly polluted by the sewage from the tin mines and the water volume of the lake has decreased significantly due to climate changes.
