history

Today's parish church of San Pelayo was formerly part of a Benedictine monastery that was founded in the 10th century. The church was built around 1170 and consecrated to St. Pelagius of Córdoba (Spanish Pelayo , Portuguese Paio ). Pelagius, who is particularly venerated in Spain, was, according to legend, a grandson or nephew of the Bishop of Tui and is said to have been martyred at the beginning of the 10th century . In 1178 the monastery received a donation from King Ferdinand II. Today only the church remains of the monastery.

architecture

The church has a single nave and is divided into five bays . The nave is covered by a wooden ceiling, the choir has a stone vault, which is underpinned by belt arches .

The outer walls of the nave divide flat buttresses . The recessed, semicircular apse is structured by slender three-quarter columns. The apse and nave are pierced by arched windows, the archivolts of which rest on columns with carved capitals and are framed by a wide scroll frieze .

The west facade, above which an open bell tower ( espadaña ) rises, is divided by three round arches. The side arches frame glare fields, in the middle arch the stepped main portal opens . It is bordered by slender, set columns with figuratively sculpted capitals. On these are the zodiac signs of Sagittarius , birds and animals, some with human heads. The two consoles (mochetas) on which the unadorned tympanum rests are designed as the heads of wolves.

The tympanum of the simpler south portal is decorated with two serrated arches and is also supported by consoles depicting animal heads. A roller frieze runs over the arch.
