The sand is a group of houses belonging to the city of Bühl on the Schwarzwaldhochstraße ( B 500 ) below the Mehliskopf . It is located in the northern Black Forest at an altitude of 824  m above sea level. NHN .

Here the state road L 83 - coming from the two directions Bühl / Bühlertal and Murgtal / Schwarzenbachtalsperre - joins the Schwarzwaldhochstraße. The Westweg also leads through the hamlet . At the intersection is the former Kurhaus Sand, a chapel and a Bismarck memorial . In the forest east of the sand lies the small sand lake dammed up for rafting . There are three ski lifts with associated slopes in the immediate vicinity. Two tow lifts are located on the Mehliskopf, a smaller one on the slope in the direction of Bühlertal is out of order.

The Badener Höhe is three kilometers to the east, and the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest, the Hornisgrinde , is seven kilometers to the south .

The name sand comes from the sandy red sandstone floor.

history

Around 1845 a shelter for forest workers and truckers was built on the sand, to which a bar was later added. The hut was converted into an inn in 1874. Due to the increasing number of guests, the building could be enlarged and converted into a health resort. The inauguration took place in 1891 in the presence of Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden , who also inaugurated the observation tower named after him on the Badener Höhe.

Around 1920 a gas station was set up next to the Kurhaus. In 1930 a post office opened on the sand, followed by a police post in 1936. All three facilities are now no longer in operation. A Telekom switching center based on the sand is also responsible for Herrenwies , Hundseck , Plättig / Bühlerhöhe and Unterstmatt ; these places in the high altitude area along the Black Forest High Road have the common area code 07226.

150 meters behind the Kurhaus, the Bergwaldhütte was built in the forest in 1949 as a rest home for children and later for police officers. In 1965 the chapel "Zum Guten Shepherd" was built. Only the mountain forest hut is still managed and open to all guests.

Directions

The supraregional approach to the sand is via the A 5 motorway to Bühl and then via Bühlertal to the Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B 500). From the direction of Freudenstadt, the route leads via the B 500 or alternatively via the B 462 , the latter being the somewhat faster but not quite so worth seeing route.

The sand can also be reached with the bus routes 245 Baden-Baden – Mummelsee and 263 Bühl – Forbach within the Karlsruhe transport network .
