The Badener Höhe is a mountain in the northern Black Forest on the districts of Baden-Baden and Forbach . At 1002.2  m above sea level NHN it forms the highest point of the Baden-Baden city area. The mountain is located above the Herrenwies district of Forbach near the Schwarzenbach dam . Its western and southern areas belong to the Black Forest National Park . The Badener Höhe is a popular hiking and excursion destination that is connected via many hiking trails (such as the Westweg ). The forest on the summit of Badener Höhe has largely fallen victim to several storms, including hurricane Lothar .

Friedrichsturm

On site, next to a refuge, there is the 30 m high Friedrichsturm , built in 1890 from red sandstone by Anton Klein and inaugurated on October 5, 1891 by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden . The observation tower is a cultural monument that can be seen from afar. From here you can see far over the northern Black Forest, including Herrenwies , the nearby Mehliskopf and the Hornisgrinde . In the north, the Große Feldberg in the Taunus and the Melibokus in the Odenwald can only be seen when the weather is very clear . If you look to the north-northwest, you can see the Palatinate Forest and, if the visibility is good, also the Donnersberg . In the west the Vosges rise in France. In extremely good visibility conditions, some peaks of the Swiss Alps are visible far to the south-southeast . The distant view extends in the east to the Swabian Alb .

The building of the tower was preceded by the foundation of the Baden-Baden section of the Black Forest Association in 1884 . The foundation stone was laid on June 9, 1890 by Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden. In 2002 the tower had to be closed due to safety deficiencies. Thanks to a fundraising campaign, the necessary restoration work was carried out quickly and the tower was reopened on June 19, 2003.

A spiral staircase in the tower leads after 35 steps to the lower viewing platform , which is about 6.5 m high above the inclined support pillars. Another 133 steps lead to the upper platform, on which the stair exit is protected by a lockable metal superstructure.
