NN in the Schwarzenbachtal , about 3 km above the Schwarzenbachtalsperre and below the Badener Höhe . It is surrounded by the northern part of the Black Forest National Park, which was founded in 2014 .

geography

The place is about seven kilometers away from any other settlement (nearest town: Bühlertal ) and consists of 34 houses. The population is around 70 people. In summer, Herrenwies is a popular hiking area for guests from the Baden-Baden region. In winter, the area around Herrenwies is used by cross-country skiers .

history

Herrenwies, Hundsbach and Erbersbronn were founded by Franz Anton Dürr from Rastatt in the course of the founding of the Herrenwies glassworks in 1732 . In previous centuries, near the village, felled wood was transported away via the Herrenwieser Schwallung .

Until the Schwarzenbachtalsperre was built around 1922, part of Herrenwies was in the area of today's reservoir . The houses were demolished to carry out the construction of the dam and rebuilt in the area of today's Herrenwies.

From the glassworks period (1732–1778), only the St. Antonius chapel, built in 1744, remains in 2018. The secularized chapel was acquired in 2014 by the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse cultural association , which wants to reactivate the chapel as a museum and event location. The Rossstall, which was part of the Dürrschen main building that burned down in 1944 , was not built until 1784. The exact location of the glassworks with ten furnace workshops has not yet been determined. It is very likely that the building with the furnace was where the Braun Pension is today.

The Siegwarth-Gässle, which is known by the locals, is likely to date from the time of the glassworks. This led past the Siegwarths Hütte , which no longer exists today . This hut was drawn by Carl Philipp Fohr in 1814 . This picture and another one with Herrenwies as a motif is exhibited in the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt .

Several Johannes Siegwarths were also part of a stove workshop, and the field path can be traced back to whose family name. The not directly related glassmaker Michael Siegwarth (born September 30, 1746, Äule - May 31, 1798 Herrenwies) is the founder of the Herrenwieser and later Hundsbacher lines of the Siegwarth family.

Other larger families in Herrenwies were Schoch, Ihle, Schnurr, Müller and Winter, who mostly worked as wood cutters after the glassworks closed in 1778.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Herrenwies there is a year-round campsite (mostly long-term campers) and the Kolping Society's Geschwister-Scholl-Haus .

There is also a youth hostel in Herrenwies that is advertised as an environmental study place and has 140 beds.

With the “Turning Point” Herrenwies has a nationally known event location and discotheque located in the basement of the old school building .

Despite the small number of residents there is a carnival club in Herrenwies, the Teufel vom Teufelskamin 1998 e. V., with around 50 active members. The association is also active nationwide.
