history
When and from where the first settlers entered the Murg Valley can only be guessed; probably around 1000 AD in the front valley area, probably from the Rhine plain. In the 13th century the valley was settled as far as Gernsbach . The impenetrable, inhospitable jungle behind Gernsbach was economically worthless at that time, as the mountains were impassable and the wood was not used. For this reason the middle and rear Murg valley remained uninhabited. Only the rafting made the use of the abundance of wood possible. In an early document between 1336 and 1363, the former place name "Gaochspach" is found, the cuckoo was probably the inspiration for this.
In 1461 the exact boundaries of the city were determined. The reason for this was the chopping of wood from the broom fields on Gausbacher and Forbacher districts, in 1821 the boundary stones along the old wine route were renewed. Some of these can still be seen today. After Forbach , a bridge over the Murg was first mentioned in a document in 1461 , and in 1778 another wooden bridge was built, which even withstood the great flood of 1824, which destroyed many bridges of the Murg. An iron bridge was also built in 1874. In 1555 it was ordered that better dogs should be bred for better wild boar hunting, because Gausbach had to provide ten dogs. In 1623 there was famine in Gausbach. Forbach / Gausbach became Margravial Baden in 1675.
In the course of industrialization , 230 people emigrated from 1833 to 1882, the majority of them to the USA . In 1888 Johann Friedrich Dorn founded a cardboard factory on Gausbacher premises, in 1903 a town hall was built and in 1910 the first train went to Forbach / Gausbach over the Murg Valley Railway. In 1924 Gausbach received a school.
Due to the risk of bombing during the Second World War , a local radio system was put into operation in 1943, which was intended to warn the population if the Schwarzenbachtalsperre were destroyed . In this war three people died in a bomb attack. In 1955, during the post-war reconstruction, the wooden bridge built in 1461 was renewed and in 1956 the Church of the Blessed Bernhard was consecrated. On July 1, 1974, Gausbach was incorporated into Forbach , and in 1977 the B 462 bypass was inaugurated.
