Sandrine Sabrina Laure Bélier (born September 2, 1973 in Longjumeau , Essonne Department ) is a French environmental lawyer and politician ( Europe Écologie-Les Verts , formerly Europe Écologie ). She was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014 .

Life and politics

Bélier studied law at the Universities of Paris-Sud and Strasbourg III Robert Schuman . She graduated with a DESS in environmental and planning law and a DEA in public law, with a focus on human rights.

She then taught environmental law at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Upper Alsace and was also involved in various environmental protection organizations. In 2002 she became director of Alsace Nature, the Alsace Nature Association . In 2007 she took part in the Grenelle de l'environnement (public discussion forums on the environment) and in 2008 was appointed a member of the Commission nationale du débat public . In the same year she became Federal Director of France Nature Environnement .

Bélier was in the 2009 European elections ecological green as a top candidate of the Alliance Europe Écologie in the constituency eastern France in the European Parliament elected. It was particularly successful in Alsace and Strasbourg with around 21 percent of the vote. As a MEP, Belier sat in the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance . She was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and a delegate for relations with Japan.

In the 2014 European elections , Europe Écologie-Les Verts , for which they ran again as the top candidate, only received 6.4 percent in eastern France, too little for a return to the EU Parliament. In the 2015 regional elections in the new Grand Est region (merger of Alsace, Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne ), Bélier was also the top candidate for the Greens. They received 6.7 percent of the vote, but not a single seat on the regional council.

Bélier was awarded the Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite in 2017 .
